Premium Quality
Manduka Yoga Mat

This Manduka yoga mat is made of rubber, which gives it durability and stability–and a bit more sustainability. But it’s a relatively thick yoga mat, so it’s not ideal for traveling.

Founded by the architect-turned-yogi Peter Sterios back in 1977, Manduka has become an established name in all things yoga – including its renowned PRO yoga mat.

The quality of equipment and activewear that the brand produces has led to the Manduka yoga mat being quite popular. High-intensity yoga sessions and CrossFit-friendly? Check. Comfortable to use even with joint disorders? Check. Made in an environmentally-conscious method? Check.

The company’s ‘never wears out’ claim needs to hold up, as this isn’t the cheapest mat you can buy. The premium profile demands a premium experience. We looked at this to consider what value this mat provides and for whom it is designed.

Whether you go for Manduka’s PRO or PROlite series, you are set for years of productive yoga sessions that won’t require a yoga mat upgrade. This is the merit of Manduka and the brand’s use of dense materials that just so happen to be made in an eco-friendly way, too. Rain or shine, you’ll be able to enjoy your stretches and cardio-intense workouts with an equally high level of enthusiasm.

These come in two different lengths: 71 inches and 83 inches, which are longer than the standard 68. Taller yogis and crossfit fanatics appreciate this.

Manduka’s PRO yoga mat might not have the best traction from the get-go, but once you get to know it, you’ll be amazed by what it can offer you. We’re talking no sweat- or oil-absorbent properties, 6mm-thick padding for maximum comfort, and the type of surface that’s easy to clean.

Certainly, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows – the mat isn’t as lightweight, quick to break in, and affordable as desired, but given that you’re serious about investing in a durable piece of yoga equipment that is guaranteed to last you for a decade, you’ll quickly disregard its downsides.

Quality

Perhaps the strongest trait of Manduka’s PRO yoga mat is its superb durability. It comes from the highly-regarded PVC that, in the case of this mat, is backed by the OEKO-TEX®️ certification. This tried, tested and true booster guarantees unparalleled construction that is designed to last you ages.

Speaking about construction – the closed-cell structure of the PRO mat is what a big portion of yogis mention as its greatest asset. It ensures no moisture gets absorbed into the mat and, as a result, no bacteria starts breeding. This is great news for everyone who tends to sweat a lot during their Bikram and pilates sessions.

Add the latex-free label to the mix, and you’ve got yourself an all-around yoga mat that will suit everyone’s needs from young to old.

Comfort

We won’t judge you if the first thing you did when coming across this review was scrolling down to this section – we like our yoga mats to be as comfortable as possible too. Luckily, this is the case with Manduka’s PRO mat.

The 6 millimeters of thickness combined with a relatively heavy weight is the recipe for comfortable equipment. Whether you’ll be using your elbows and knees a lot or are a beginner who wants to prevent the development of long-term issues with joints, this mat will support them well.

The stability you get from this mat is uncanny too. Due to its 8.5 pounds of weight, you can expect this mat to stay out no matter how many times you fall while attempting to perfect those headstands. Feel free to balance even the most challenging poses on it without worrying about slipping halfway through!

Performance

If you want to get the most out of your Manduka PRO yoga mat – and you most definitely do once you’ve paid this significant of a sum – you should familiarize yourself with the company-suggested ‘breaking in’ method. It involves pouring sea salt on your mat and letting it rest overnight before rinsing it off.

That said, over time, you shouldn’t have any problems doing the most mat-reliant poses that are often executed with a towel underneath. The aftermath will merely consist of you wiping it down with a wet cloth and storing it in a closet or a yoga mat bag.

The downside of this yoga mat is that it’s fairly heavy to carry from your home to the yoga studio and back. This means that it’d be best for you to leave it there, throw it in the trunk of your car when going to the gym, or using it at home only.

Price/Quality

If not for the ‘breaking in’ process, the price to quality ratio of this PRO yoga mat would be stellar. It’s built from materials that last, and manufactured in a sustainable way. It enables a secure and safe yoga or a pilates practice, and is hypo-allergenic (hint: latex-free).

But since there is some ‘getting used to’ and the price is steep, to say the least, the price to quality ratio isn’t the best on the market.

Are you a yoga beginner who is looking for a mat that would last you over a decade? Or maybe you’re a professional yogi willing to upgrade to a more high-quality yoga mat that will assist you throughout the toughest poses you’re proud to know how to do. No matter what end of the spectrum you’re on, chances are you’ll find Manduka’s PRO yoga mat a good investment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Manduka yoga mat?

Out of all the high-quality yoga mats available on the market, the ones designed by Manduka are hands down some of the best ones. They are considered to be the most reliable, easy to use, and long-lasting.

The “#1 mat recommended by teachers worldwide” is their PRO version of the mat. Not only is it best-selling, but it’s also the densest while still remaining comfortable for both amateurs and advanced yogis.

Is Manduka PRO mat slippery?

If you sweat a lot, you may find the Manduka PRO mat to be a little slippery at the beginning. This is due to the transparent production film found on the surface of the Manduka mats.

To speed up the ‘breaking in’ process (and get rid of the slippery feel much quicker), consider applying the Salt Scrub Method explained by the Eco yoga store in this article.

How do you store a Manduka PRO mat?

To prolong the lifespan of your Manduka PRO mat, you should store it as suggested by the manufacturer. In this case, this means rolling it back with the top side (where the fabric finish is evident) facing outwards. This way, the corners of your mat will stay flat every time you use it.

You can either store it in your closet or keep it in the yoga mat bag that will preserve the original construction of the equipment for longer.

How long do Manduka mats last?

The brand new Manduka yoga mat lasts about 10 years with regular use and proper care. If your mat “wears out past its useful life from regular use under normal conditions”, the manufacturer promises to replace it.

Are Manduka yoga mats worth it?

The seemingly high price tag of Manduka yoga mats is wholly justified if you factor in the lifetime warranty offered by the manufacturer. In fact, it can even end up being more affordable than some other yoga mats since there will be no need to replace them anytime soon after the initial purchase.
