Learn more about the history of San José, California

Surrounded by rolling hills in Silicon Valley, San José  is a major technology hub in the state of California. Belonging to Santa Clara County, it’s located just southeast of San Francisco Bay and about an hour and a half drive away from Monterey in the south. The Mediterranean climate makes San José  a sunny city with overall mild weather all year long.

San Jose Buildings Photo

The third-largest city in California also happens to be the most populous component of the extensive metropolitan area around the San Fransisco bay that includes Oakland. Some neighboring communities are Los Gatos in the southwest, Milpitas in the northeast, Santa Clara and Campbell in the west, Alum Rock in the east, and Sunnyvale in the northwest. It covers an area of 179.97 sq mi (466.1 km2).

  • Before becoming the Capital of Silicon Valley, San José –before Europeans arrived–the area known as San José  was inhabited by Costanoan Indians The foundation of the modern city is credited to José  Joaquin Moraga in 1777. This was a farming community called Pueblo de San José  de Guadalupé. It was the source of vegetables, wheat, and cattle to the military army at San Francisco and Monterey during the Mexican and Spanish colonial periods.
  • Following the American occupation of California in 1846, San José  became the state’s first capital city for a brief period of time. It also became the first state legislative assembly set up in December of 1849. Just a year later, in March of 1850, San José  acquired the title of the first chartered city in the state of California. It had become a trade depot for the goldfields located east of Sacramento by then.

  • Thanks to the development of railroads in 1864 in San Francisco, San José  started reaping the benefits of trade connections and gained access to produce from the nearby farms. Not too long after, Santa Clara Valley became the fruit processing and orchards region.
  • The industries in the city remained focused on food processing, agricultural equipment, and the manufacturing of orchard supplies until 1940. World War II brought new industries focusing on electrical machinery, motor vehicles, and aircraft parts. At this time, large business- and aerospace equipment firms started establishing in the area. San José  experienced a boom in the technological sphere, with the internet becoming the new go-to network that jumpstarted the industry’s growth.

  • Next, the city tripled its area between 1960 and 2000 rapidly, and its population has quadrupled too. Ethnical diversity continued to increase with Hispanic and Asian communities growing and evolving and later constituting three-fifths of the entire population of San José .
  • Today, the Californian city is still as technologically advanced as before (if not more). Some of the main industries remain to be software production, hardware design, and the Internet. Industrial machinery, electronic equipment, and scientific instruments along with health, engineering, and business services had economic importance too. The same applied to agriculture with major crops being fruits and vegetables, greenhouse plants, and beef cattle, among other items.
  • San José  State University and San José  City College are situated here; Stanford and Santa Clara universities are also close to San José . The city is home to professional ballet, theatre, music, dance, and opera. It’s filled with museums and parks that make up a good chunk of the town.
