Vandenberg was a former Navy missile and troop tracker, intentionally sunk 140 feet underwater as part of the government’s drive to promote coral growth in the area, as well as improve diving tourism. At 522.10 feet long, beam at 71.5 feet draft at 24 feet, it’s the 2nd biggest artificial reef in the world and within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, 7 miles away from the shores.
