When we review a travel bag we also take a look into how it performs in other categories we might use it for. How it performs as a hiking or travel backpack that’s comfortable, lightweight, and has enough storage room, or as a commuter bag that fits extra folders and protects your laptop against damage and rain.

If you are looking for a carry-on backpack that allows you to organize and hold all your belongings securely, this backpack might just be for you.

The Osprey Farpoint 40 is large enough to pack everything you need while still being able to use it as a carry on no matter the airline. If you’re like me, you will love that this bag saves you check-in fees and hours waiting in baggage claim.

But it’s a travel backpack first, and in that aspect, the Osprey Fairpoint travel pack 40L is all about quality, lightweight and spacious design. There is plenty of space to make sure that light-traveling does not mean compromises that will badly impact your journey. The three compartments allow you to compartmentalize and store your belongings safely. The material is water-resistant but not waterproof, so we don’t suggest dumping your bag in a pool of water.

The straps and zippers are well constructed and will last you years of traveling in the sun, cold, or rain. The straps can also be tucked away easily, creating a cleaner look while avoiding friction, overheating, and sweat. It’s a compact backpack with a sleeve big enough for a laptop up to 15 inches, but the positioning of the sleeve leaves your tablet or laptop vulnerable to damage.

Overall, the Farpoint 40L is very comfortable and easy to use for hiking or a traveling carry-on bag.

Storage

While the Osprey 40L can be used as a school, hiking, or everyday bag, it is most specifically designed for travelers.

This bag features three main compartments:

Small Top Compartment

  • This compartment is great for small things you use frequently like your wallet, passport, keys, etc.
  • The soft inner lining is also ideal to store your sunnies scratch-free.

Medium Compartment

  • This is the compartment you are going to want to use for work-related stuff.
  • Notebooks, cables, and sweaters fit perfectly while the padded laptop sleeve holds your laptop and Ipad safe.
  • Due to the location of the laptop sleeve, there have been complaints that Ipads have cracked on impact.
  • In light of this, we suggest you keep that it in a protective sleeve in the main compartment.

Main Compartment

  • The main compartment opens like a suitcase allowing you to pack more efficiently.
  • This also means no more digging around every time you look for something at the bottom.

Like all bags, there will always be a pro and cons list. This bag may not be the ideal bag for everyone, so think carefully about what you want from this bag before purchasing it. But given the quality of this backpack and the design, you won’t be disappointed with it. So, ya, we recommend the Osprey Farpoint 40L travel backpack.

The Osprey Farpoint 40L is perfect for you if:

  • You want to travel light
  • You want a big carry on backpack to save time or money on a checked bag
  • You are looking for a decent urban bag for everyday use.

The Farpoint 40L is a great choice for people who want a true carry-on sized backpack. It’s big enough to fit a large amount of stuff and can easily be used for long-term travel yet streamlined enough to navigate busy streets and daily life.

Something that truly stood out to us is the shoulder harness and hip belts on the Farpoint backpacks. It’s extremely comfortable and has the same feel as a hiking backpack.

Price-wise the Farpoint 40L retails for somewhere around $160 which is pretty affordable when compared to other travel backpacks. This is a bag you’ll have for a few years of good use. You might even have it for a great many years!
