Brief History

There’s a rich history and culture to uncover in this charming little town set on Riviera Maya’s south end. It was one of the last settlements built and inhabited by the ancient Mayans from the 13th to 15th centuries. Created as a site of worship for the Great Descending God (aptly characterized as a diver), you can find depictions of him in the many temples and pyramids hidden in the jungle.

As the Mayans flourished and created beautiful works of art, wove vibrant tapestries, and cultivated crops such as vanilla and chili peppers, they became advanced traders. Eventually, Tulum became an important Caribbean port vital for sea trade between Mexico, Argentina, Honduras, and other Latin American countries. Most widely known for the trading of obsidian, you can still find this gorgeous dark gem in the intricate jewelry sold in many local shops in Tulum today.

To protect against pirates and foreign traders from taking over the prime location, a stone wall was built around the city. This makes Tulum one of the only fortified Mayan sites in the world. And what a sight it is to see! Large slabs of stone buildings adorn the cliffs of a brilliant white sand beach with sparkling blue water. It’s caught the attention of travelers from all around the world, who flock to Tulum to experience its mystical beauty and well-preserved ruins.

Feel Like Getting Out of the Resort?

Today, Tulum is gaining even more popularity. Tourists are straying from the ever popular Cancun and choosing to stay here instead. The breathtaking beaches and sparkling blue Caribbean water are a huge selling point, but only the tip of the iceberg. Tulum offers so much more if you’re willing to step outside of your resort!

Walk through ancient ruins as the Mayans once did, explore some of the best diving spots in the world, get up close and personal with the Mayan jungle at the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, and check out the stunning local art and shops in downtown Tulum.

Situated on the cliff side of a stunning Caribbean beach, the Tulum ruins overlooking the ocean create a very picturesque scene.

Here’s what you can expect to see at the Tulum Ruins:

  • El Castillo – the main pyramid which was used as a an ancient lighthouse
  • Temple of the Frescoes – the most well-preserved building with an iconic mural inside
  • House of the Halach Uinic – a “halach uinic” was a high priest that ruled over each Mayan city
  • House of the Columns – a large building with four rooms and huge stone columns holding up the roof

While packing for your trip to the Tulum ruins, be sure to grab your sunglasses, plenty of water, and light, comfortable clothing. You might also want to throw in your bathing suit for a chance to swim at the amazing “secret” beach located right under the ruins.

  • Chitzen Itza

Here’s your chance to visit one of the seven wonders of the world. The looming pyramid of Chitzen Itza is a sight you won’t want to leave Tulum without seeing. Guided tours provide opportunities for lots of learning about this majestic building.

Did you know that it’s essentially a giant calendar? The four sides of the pyramid each represent a season of the year; the total amount of steps even equals 365! This calendar system was used to determine the ideal times for sowing and harvesting crops.

Along with learning many more interesting facts about the Mayans, a guided tour will also take you through other nearby monuments. The Temple of Warriors, an observatory, and an ancient ball court are all within walking distance.

  • Cenotes

You might already know that Mexico is a great destination for diving spots because of the warm weather, clear waters, and amazing reefs.

But if you haven’t already heard of the incredible underground caverns called cenotes, you have to add them to your bucket list! Tulum is the perfect place to find them. Looming walls of limestone, shimmering emerald water, and trailing vines make for some Instagram-worthy shots (you can even take it up a notch with an underwater camera).

Whether you’re a diver or not, cenotes are an incredible natural wonder that you should experience on your trip to Tulum. You can swim, dive, snorkel, or even just walk through these spectacular underground caves.

Home to a diverse abundance of wildlife and a wealth of flora and fauna, the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve is one of Mother Nature’s best works.

Comprising of nine ecosystems, you’ll find tropical forests, coral reefs, savannahs, lagoons, and miles of untouched beaches. From monkeys and jaguars to crocodiles and giant land crabs, the wildlife is as diverse as it is plentiful.

For your best chance at seeing and exploring the reserve, make a day trip out of it and book a guided tour. From bird watching to fly fishing, your options are almost endless!

Here are a few popular ways to experience the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve:

  • Jeep Safari Tour
  • Reef Snorkel and Mayan Canal
  • Boat Tour of Ancient Mayan Route
  • Birdwatching Tour
  • Fly Fishing
  • Art & Shops

For art lovers and creative souls, Tulum Town is a must-see. Streets are adorned with vibrant murals and lined with local vendors selling stunning handmade jewelry and other knick knacks.

Visit the Balam Art on Feathers art gallery for a unique display of art created on canvases made out of different bird feathers. Admire local art with a delicious cup of coffee in hand at the Tulum Art Club. Every corner of Tulum Town seems to be full of local art on display in some form or another. Check out Instagram and travel blogs to find all the best street art.

Hoping to pick up a few souvenirs for your friends and family back home? Ditch the tacky magnets and keychains and pick out an authentic handcrafted sugar skull or embroidered blouse at Mixik. La Llorona is another speciality gift shop where you can get a unique gift like a hand carved flute, a beautiful blanket, or a splendid piece of local artwork. The upstairs area is dedicated to antiques and vintage items like old Mexican movie posters. Good luck leaving there empty-handed!

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best all-inclusive resort in Tulum?

If you’re ready to take a trip to Tulum, you’re probably wondering where you should stay. All-inclusive resorts are popular options for couples and families alike because of their convenience and affordability. However, every resort caters to a different type of crowd and varies in price, proximity to beach, and on-site amenities.

To find the best all-inclusive resort to meet your dream vacation needs, check out the list below! There’s something for every kind of traveler.

Is it better to stay in Tulum or Cancun?

While both Tulum and Cancun are excellent choices for access to beautiful beaches, historical sites, and delicious food options, their overall vibes can be very different.

If a low-key vacation with opportunities for outdoor adventures is what you want, staying in Tulum is the way to go.

Check out these resorts in Tulum for an unforgettable jungle getaway:

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a high-energy atmosphere with a vibrant nightlife and opportunities for partying, Cancun is probably a better fit.

Here are a few of our favorite resorts in Cancun:

What is the best month to go to Tulum?

The best month(s) to visit Tulum will depend on the factors you find most important: weather, budget, or crowds.

  • For consistently warm weather and less chance of rainfall, you’ll want to travel between February – May.
  • If you have a budget to consider and want to get the most bang for your buck, you should travel between June – October (considered low season).
  • To avoid crowds and throngs of tourists, your best bet is traveling between November-December.

Check out our all-inclusive guide to Tulum to find the best resort for your trip.

Is Tulum safer than Cancun?

Generally, yes. Although you can fall victim to petty theft in both Tulum and Cancun (the biggest crime relating to tourists), you are less likely to experience this in Tulum due to the laid-back, secluded nature of the area as opposed to Cancun’s mega resorts and crowds. Just be sure to keep a close eye on your beach bag if you happen to be out and about.

While there has been a recent increase in violent crime, it’s mostly drug-related and doesn’t affect tourists. As long as you’re practicing general caution (avoiding going out too late, limiting alcohol intake when outside the resort, and booking tours with only reputable organizations), Tulum is a safe place for a vacation.

Why is Tulum so popular?

No longer Mexico’s best-kept secret, the coastal town of Tulum is popular for its spectacular beaches, well-preserved Mayan ruins, exceptional diving destinations, and its exotic wildlife and jungles.
