The Ascent From Sleepy Fishing Town to Vacation Getaway
When you combine the elements of a tropical getaway with the charm of local Mexican culture, you get the beautiful coastal town of Puerto Vallarta. Located in the Mexican state of Jalisco, “Vallarta” (as it’s commonly known to locals) sits along the Pacific Ocean on Banderas Bay. It’s known for its breathtaking beaches, abundant marine life, great golf courses, and top-notch resorts.
Puerto Vallarta’s story begins with the indigenous people called the Azatlan, who inhabited the land until the Spaniards arrived in the 1500s. The area was mostly used as a resting stop and hideaway for sailors, explorers, and pirates until about the 1800s. Since then, the beaches of Banderas Bay have been home to everything from boatyards and shipping ports to bountiful banana plantations.
In 1964, everything changed for this little town after the filming of The Night of the Iguana. The film set captured the sun-kissed beaches, cobble-stoned lanes, and charming colonial architecture of Puerto Vallarta. Thanks to the attention from Hollywood, it wasn’t long before the city was transformed into a popular tourist destination.
Today, the shorelines of Banderas Bay are lined with hotels and resorts full of wide-eyed travelers eager to explore the city’s natural beauty and essence of its Mexican culture.
Feel Like Getting Out Of The Resort?
If you find yourself being one of those travelers, you might be wondering what you should do in Puerto Vallarta. While the resorts are wonderful and provide a peaceful environment for relaxing, you might be itching to get out of the resort and explore a bit.
Luckily for you, there’s plenty to see and do in Puerto Vallarta! Visit spectacular beaches for snorkeling and scuba diving, venture out into the lush jungles for hiking and other adventures, or work on your handicap at some of the world’s best golf courses. Get a glimpse into local life by strolling through cobblestoned streets and the famous Malecon Boardwalk. Discover for yourself why Puerta Vallarta has become the second most popular tourist destination in Mexico.
Golf
The area has 10 courses, found oceanfront and cut through the jungle, with beautiful views and amazing challenges. Have you heard of the “Tail of the Whale” – a green on an island, 170 m from the shore that requires an amphibious vehicle or low tide to get to if you manage to get your ball on the green!
Famous courses in the region include:
- Pacifico and Bahia at Punta Mita Golf Club
- The Nicklaus Course and the Weiskopf Course at Vista Vallarta Golf Club
You can plan for a few days of great golf and beautiful views. Other courses in the region are:
- Greg Norman designed Litibú Golf Course
- El Tigre Golf & Country Club
- Marina Vallarta Golf Club
- Nayar Golf Course
- Flamingos Golf
- Vidanta Golf Nayar
Check with your resort to see what golf packages they offer or if they can arrange reduced green fees, tee times, and transport for you.
Snorkeling & Scuba Diving
Warm tropical weather and calm waters are what a diver’s dreams are made of. Boasting some of the best dive spots in the world, Mexico is a great destination for incredible underwater experiences. Puerto Vallarta is no exception! Regardless of experience or comfort level, there are plenty of diving and snorkeling opportunities for all visitors.
If you choose only one place to dive, let it be the Marieta Islands. This cluster of islands remains untouched by tourism, resulting in incredible natural beauty and pristine beaches. Book a diving excursion here and explore an awe-inspiring underwater mountain that’s teeming with tropical fish, sharks, turtles, and other captivating marine life species. Non-divers are still able to enjoy the Marieta Islands by snorkeling through vibrant coral reefs or kayaking atop the gentle ocean waves.
Another scuba site worth visiting with great beginner options is the Los Arcos National Marine Park. With some of the deepest waters in Banderas Bay, there’s a whole world waiting to be explored – from tunnels and archways to a dazzling display of colorful fish, manta rays, and lobsters. You might even see an octopus or sea turtle!
Experienced divers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to dive in El Morro, a striking dive site at the edge of Banderas Bay that contains amazing underwater caverns and a stunning variety of marine life. A series of large rock formations can be seen jutting out of the Pacific Ocean, but only seen to the diver’s eyes are the multitude of tunnels and caverns that hold a diversity of creatures underneath. You’ll see everything from octopi, sea turtles, seahorses, vibrant corals, and sponges to huge eels and manta rays. It does contain challenging currents and testy sea conditions, so only consider this spot if you’re a seriously advanced diver.
Hiking
While hiking isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of a tropical vacation to Puerto Vallarta, it’s becoming more popular in recent years. And why shouldn’t it? It’s healthy for you, budget-friendly, and a great way to explore the region. Plus, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views!
Here are a few of the best hiking spots in Puerto Vallarta:
- Vallarta Botanical Gardens Hike (Easy)
Easily one of the prettiest places in Puerto Vallarta, this award-winning ecological garden has multiple trails and walkways for your enjoyment. Stroll through a stunning display of orchids, magnolias, and other native plants on your way to a small beach.
- Mirador La Cruz Lookout (Easy)
From the Malecon Boardwalk, simply follow the signs to get to this popular lookout hike. A flight of white stairs will take you up what is arguably the best view in Puerto Vallarta. You’ll see Banderas Bay, the Sierra Madre mountains, and the terra-cotta rooftops of the downtown buildings.
- Las Animas Beach Hike (Intermediate)
For this one, we’d recommend making a half-day trip and consider booking a guided tour for the best experience. The hike takes you from Boca de Tomatlan to Las Animas Beach, with plenty of gorgeous viewpoints and secluded beaches along the way.
- Monkey Mountain Jungle Hike (Intermediate)
Make sure to grab some sunscreen and a water bottle (or two) for this three hour jungle hike. It’s a tough cookie, but the stellar 360 degree views of both jungle and coastline at the top of Monkey Mountain are well worth the trek!
The Malecon Boardwalk
A trip to Puerto Vallarta wouldn’t be complete without visiting the vibrant stretch of the Malecon. This oceanfront strip is the perfect representation of everything Puerto Vallarta encapsulates. Stroll down the boardwalk, and you’ll see iconic statues, local street entertainment, souvenir shops, sea-side artists, and restaurants. It’ll be hard to miss the eye-catching Voladores de Papantlas, an ancient Mexican ritual that’s performed right on the beach.
Areas of Puerta Vallarta
Basically, there are four main neighborhoods in Puerto Vallarta. Below you’ll find each area and a short description of what you can expect to find there.
- Conchas Chinas – an upscale neighborhood south of Puerto Vallarta, featuring impressive condos and spectacular coastal views
- Zona Romantica/Old Zone– a lively area between Cuale River and the end of the beach, where art galleries, quaint shops, and the Malecon Boardwalk are located
- Hotel Zone – the commercial part of Puerto Vallarta with a more “Americanized” feel, home to all the big malls, oldest resorts, and nicer beaches
- Puerto Vallarta Marina – an upscale area with luxurious resorts, high-end restaurants, and marina filled with luxury boats
Frequently asked questions
Out of the many all-inclusive resort options in Puerto Vallarta, the “best” resort will rely heavily on the type of traveler you are and what you’re looking for in a vacation. You will need to factor in things like accommodations, restaurants, location, and amenities. The options can seem overwhelming, but don’t fret!

Unfortunately, we’re not the only ones who love a warm, tropical climate. Mosquitoes are pesky insects that can become a nuisance to our vacation at best, and a serious health issue if carrying the Zika virus at worst.
Mosquitoes are more common in the warmer and more humid months of summer in Puerto Vallarta. Be sure to plan your vacation with that in mind and pack accordingly if visiting during mosquito season.
We recommend always having bug repellant on hand, so don’t forget to toss it in your beach bag or hiking backpack before heading out on your adventures.
While they’re both popular tourist destinations, Cancun and Puerto Vallarta are actually very different in terms of price, authenticity, and general atmosphere.
Cancun has more picturesque white sand beaches, an electric nightlife, and is overall very touristy and slightly pricier than Puerto Vallarta.
On the other hand, Puerto Vallarta has more scruffy beaches, a more authentic Mexican feel to it, plenty of hole-in-the-wall spots, along with more affordable accommodations.
Take those things into consideration when you’re deciding which place to visit. For a deeper dive into each area and what it has to offer, go check out our lists for the best all-inclusive resorts in Cancun and the best all-inclusive resorts in Puerto Vallarta.
