Aruba has a diverse history and culture that’s reflected in many of the landmarks and attractions on the island today.
Originally inhabited by the indigenous Arawak tribes, Aruba was discovered by the Spanish and then later colonized by the Dutch. Attempts to set up crop plantations were unsuccessful due to the island’s dry climate and soil.
Instead, a gold rush and becoming a base for oil refineries is what caused the economy and interest in Aruba to peak. People from nearby Venezuela and Europe rushed in, and Fort Zoutman was built to ward off the threat of pirates. Later, the capital city of Oranjestad was built around the fort.

Arikok National Park
Although Aruba is known primarily for its exceptional beaches and tropical vibe, the northeastern end of the island has much more of a desert-like landscape. Massive cacti and tall hills adorn the Arikok National Park, which was primarily formed by volcanic activity, high winds, strong waves, and eroding limestone.
You can easily spend a full day at this park exploring its many unique attractions, such as historic cave drawings, the Alto Vista Chapel, and the California Lighthouse.
If you’re lucky, you might even get the chance to see leatherback and green sea turtles nesting on the shores of Dos Playa.

Balashi Gold Mill Ruins Trail (Easy)
Located at the southwest end of the island, Balashi Mill is a remnant of the island’s gold rush past. A loop trail takes you through these towering ruins.
Hooiberg Trail (Moderate)
Located close to Oranjestad, clamber up the designated cement steps to Mt. Hooiberg or choose to take the unpaved trail off to the side that’s a little more intense. You’ll be rewarded with beautiful cacti, stunning wildflowers, and even an occasional wild goat. Either way, the views from the top of Mt. Hooiberg will be well worth the trek.
Sero Jamanota to Fontein Cave and Dos Playa (Difficult)
On this climb to the highest peak of the island, you’ll see historic cave illustrations drawn by the Arawak people, walk through a desert landscape with different species of cacti, and spot plenty of wildlife such as lizards, wild donkeys, and parakeets.

Be sure to grab a few tank tops, camisoles, shorts, and loose fitting skirts. You’ll also want a comfortable pair of beach shoes or flip-flops, since you’ll probably spend most of your time at the beach or exploring the city streets.
