A Caribbean Paradise with an Ancient Past
This palm tree adorned island on the Caribbean sea was originally inhabited by ancient Mayans up until 900 AD. In fact, the name Cancun is Mayan for “Vessel at the End of the Rainbow.” With gorgeous white sand beaches, sparkling turquoise waters, and dense tropical forests, it’s nothing short of paradise.
It’s easy to understand why it quickly became a popular tourist destination today – glamorous resorts, an electric night life, and authentic Yucatán cuisine are what attract people from all around the world to this Caribbean oasis.
Although it may seem the boom of tourism has dampened the island’s natural charm, nothing could be further from the truth. Much of the city’s historical past and geography are still thoughtfully woven into its culture and attractions today.
Feel like getting out of the Resort?
If you find yourself getting a little bored within the confines of your resort, don’t worry. There are plenty of things to explore and see in Cancun.
Don’t just admire those dazzling Caribbean waters…dive right in! Explore world-famous dive sites, marvel in a one-of-a-kind underwater museum, and discover the magic of underwater caves called cenotes.
Once you’re back on land, dig deeper into the rich Mayan culture that the city is built on at the Mayan museum, Museo Maya de Cancun. Visit archeological sites and walk through Mayan ruins. If you feel like a day trip go see the awe-inspiring Tulum ruin of Chitzen Itza!
For a unique vacation experience, check out the MUSA, an underwater museum that was created to protect the coast’s local reefs while also providing a place for visitors to enjoy Cancun’s waters and marine life.
Be sure to bring an underwater camera for otherworldly shots of large concrete statues covered in marine life and plants. From figures bent over in prayer to an actual Volkswagen Beetle submerged in the water, there are now over 500 sculptures in the MUSA and more in the works!
The museum is comprised of three galleries which are located in separate locations of Cancun’s National Marine Park. The best and most popular way to see the underwater art is by diving, but there are options for snorkeling and glass bottom-boat rides as well.
-
Dive Spots
Speaking of diving, Mexico is known for some of the best diving spots in the world. It’s no surprise that year-round warm weather and clear waters put Cancun on that list. Tentative beginner or seasoned expert, there’s plenty of dive spots for every skill and comfort level to explore.
- Manchones Reef
Ideal for beginners, the Manchones Reef is in a peaceful spot off the coast of Isla Mujeres and offers plenty of spectacular views to see. Be prepared to spot angelfish, wrasse, and king crabs.
If you’re a beginner interested in scuba diving, we recommend you check our guide for everything you need to know before heading on your first underwater adventures.
- Wreck Sites
In an effort to create artificial reefs, Cancun began intentionally sinking old ships in 1980. These ships – now covered in coral, sea sponges, and lots of marine life – make fantastic dive sites.
A few notable ones are Chairel (intermediate), Hundureno (beginner), and Juan De La Barrera c-55 (advanced).
Whichever you visit, you can expect to catch glimpses of nurse sharks, eels, sea horses, and barracuda.
-
Cenotes
These underwater caves were once used for Mayan rituals long before they were filled with tourists seeking to cool down from the Mexico heat or snap some memorable shots for their socials.
Looming walls of limestone, glimmering water in shades of teal and emerald, and rays of sunshine beaming through openings from the ceilings make cenotes such a magical experience. You’ll feel like you entered the set of Avatar! Check out our reasons why you should choose to cave dive in cenotes here.
Here are some of the best cenotes in or near Cancun:
- Cenote Azul
- Cenote Zaci
- Cenote Cristalino
- Cenote Dos Ojos
Visit one of these natural swimming pools by renting a car and taking a self-guided road trip or booking a tour for a stress-free experience.
Conveniently located in the center of the Hotel Zone, the Museo Maya de Cancun is a goldmine of information not only about Mayan civilization, but all about Cancun’s history and culture.
Inside, you’ll find artifacts, art pieces, and sculptures that’ll lend you a look into the Mayans’ lives and practices.
You’ll want to trade in your flip flops for some comfortable walking shoes before visiting the museum. Adjacent to the museum is an archeological site where you’ll find lots of trails for exploring some Mayan ruins.
-
Chitzen Itza in Tulum
History buff or not, you’ll be awestruck by the majestic site of the Chitzen Itza, one of the seven wonders of the world. While it is quite a drive away from Cancun, it’s well worth the visit. Did you know it has a total of 365 steps and each side represents a season of the
year? Mayans used it to figure out best times for sowing crops and harvesting, much like a giant calendar.
Visit the Chitzen Itza on a guided tour to learn more interesting facts and see other nearby monuments such as the Temple of Warriors, an observatory, and an ancient ball court.

On the other hand, if a low-key and relaxed vacation is what you have in mind, staying in the more secluded Tulum is the way to go.
Check out these resorts in Tulum for a quiet getaway:
- Bahia Principe Luxury Sian Ka’an Resort
- Catalonia Royal Tulum
- Kore Tulum Retreat & Spa Resort
Take a look at our all-inclusive guide to Mexico to find the best spot for your vacation.
While most all-inclusive resorts state that gratuity is already included in the package, we’ve found that many guests still choose to have cash on hand to tip staff members that go above and beyond.
From bellhops lugging heavy suitcases all day long to bartenders making complicated drinks for a crowd, tipping a few dollars for these services is much appreciated.
You can also consider tipping the following services:
- Restaurant waitstaff
- Housekeeping
- Massages and spa treatments
- Concierge
- Music performers
However, resorts make it clear that tipping is never expected and is completely up to your discretion.
