Putting Speedo Hyper Elite to the Test

We at DIVEIN.com want you to be fully informed when purchasing goggles, therefore, we’ve explored both the pros and cons of several models over the last year.

We put the Speedo Hyper Elite Swimming goggles to the test with some of our more seasoned swimmers, and they agreed that we’re looking at a top-quality design here, especially for competition swimming – and there are only a couple of minor caveats (if you are well prepared for race day, these won’t matter).

Took these for a swim down the beach for some open water testing. Really enjoyed the visual clarity these swimming goggles offered as I was able to explore some of the underwater environments.
Took these for a swim down the beach for some open water testing. Really enjoyed the visual clarity these swimming goggles offered as I was able to explore some of the underwater environments.

When I put on the new Speedo Hyper Elite Mirror Swimming Goggles, I noticed that the silicone seal around my eyes was different than it had been in previous Speedo models and that it was much softer.

I was worried that this would mean there would be some leaking, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that, even after a whole two hours of training, there was no leakage whatsoever. Although I must say, the goggles felt tight on my face and left marks around my eyes. This may not be the case for most people though; I have unusually narrow eye sockets!

The design is sleek and very stylish – I have received quite a few compliments on them since I started using them. The mirrored coloring is impressive and attractive, just like the pictures in this article demonstrate; they’re an easy choice to wear if you care about looking good while you swim!

In addition to protecting against UV radiation and preventing fogging, these Speedo goggles are designed with hydrodynamic technology to improve performance during all your swimming activities.

Features

These days, no swimmer should be without a pair of swimming goggles. They are simply a must-have for any swimmer who spends significant time in the pool or open water. Instead of dealing with the pain and blurriness of opening your eyes when submerged, you can enjoy the same clarity you would have above water – especially in a competitive setting.

There is a wide selection of swimming goggles available online today, from inexpensive and simple designs to high-end, feature-rich options. Finding a pair that fits your needs and price is simple, but there is one brand that consistently finds itself at the top of the swimmer’s podium.

The Speedo Hyper Elite Mirror Swimming Goggles boast a number of features that will significantly help with performance and speed, making them a great choice for swimmers who are preparing for and racing in swimming competitions – both in the pool and open water.

You get a really good idea of how the lens extends out into the strap quite seamlessly here. This extension gives rise to additional streamlining, which reduces drag and increases stability.

Strap

You can rely on the comfort and durability of the adjustable strap. These goggles are  ideal for competitive swimmers or frequent swimmers at the local pool or beach due to the silicone design of the lens gaskets and the strap. Goggles won’t fall off your head thanks to the dual strap design that prevents slippage.

One of the issues I mentioned briefly above was the difficulty in adjusting the strap while wearing the swimming goggles. While this is not a huge issue, it is worth mentioning so that any swimmers make sure they try their newly purchased Speedo swim goggles before entering the pool (and especially before competing – the last thing you want to stifle all that hard effort and training is a leaky pair of goggles).

Notice how the strap has numbered markings. This is so that you can find your ‘setting’ and stick with it. Good to be meticulous when preparing for a race!

Lens and Gaskets

Poor quality lenses that fog up easily and scratch easily are standard on far too many goods now available. Spending the extra money on a good pair of swimming goggles can make all the difference between a relaxing swim and a frustrating one.

The Speedo Hyper Elite Swimming Goggles have a mirrored, wide peripheral lens with anti-fog coating to help you see everything around you, including your competitor in the adjacent lane, and not just what’s in front of you.

The lenses extend out past the gaskets and seamlessly into the straps. This is not simply to add to the ‘cool’ look of this product, but this design offers a greater degree of streamlining, which reduces drag when swimming at speed and increases stability.

Again, you see how the coloration varies at different angles - very cool. Note also the removable nose bridge. If you find these goggles aren’t fitting you right, try switching this out with one of the alternate nose bridges provided within the box.

The second thing to mention is that these Speedo swimming goggles are made with Speedo’s patented IQfit 3D goggle seal, which offers a leak-free, secure fit and is supposed to reduce marks around the eyes. I, unfortunately, was not able to avoid the panda eyes whenever I tested these goggles, however, it is very likely that this is a specific issue to me and my face shape.  From experience, I’d recommend that swimmers with narrower eye sockets should look to products such as Arena Cobra Swimming Goggles. Speedo's unique IQfit 3D goggle seal provides a snug, watertight fit and lessens the risk of markings developing around the eyes.

Price/ Quality Ratio

Speedo Hyper Elite Mirror Swimming Goggles may be purchased for roughly $60, making them one of the more expensive options. This is reflected in the high-quality components and ergonomic construction of these swimming goggles for competition. Your swimming goggles will be clear, comfortable, performance-enhancing, and, most importantly, long-lasting. The clincher here is superb quality.

Do we recommend them?

Recommend Highly. These goggles are great for competitive swimmers at the advanced level, and they fall squarely inside our “must buy” price range.

The mirrored lenses are useful when swimming in the sun, but they are also clear underwater. The product’s hydrodynamic, performance-enhancing design features are at the top of the line and make these swimming goggles ideal for experienced swimmers. The only real caveat is the fact that these goggles are impossible to adjust while they are being worn, but otherwise, they are comparable with some of the greats; such as the TYR or Arena products that we’ve tried in the past.

If you are a beginner or intermediate swimmer looking for a pair of cheaper goggles to go on holiday with, then check out the Speedo Hydrospex Goggles.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are Speedo goggles worth it?

Swimming goggles are designed with various goals in mind: comfort, durability, visibility, performance, profile, price… Going for well-regarded swimwear brands such as Speedo, Arena or TYR may provide you with the comfort that each product is tried and tested according to the latest standards, even if this costs a little more. Good makes like Speedo rarely disappoint.

Is it good to wear goggles while swimming?

Wearing goggles is the simplest way to shield your eyes from harmful chemicals found in pool or ocean water. They are also useful for warding off illnesses and cloudy vision brought on by the bacteria and algae that thrive in freshwaters.

Are tinted swimming goggles better?

Unless you only ever swim in a pool, a single goggle color is not going to be adequate for all conditions. Whether you swim inside, outdoors, or in open water, you run the risk of damaging your eyesight due to fatigue and glare. Whether you swim in a pool, the open water, or the great outdoors, you should always have a pair on hand.

Polarized lenses eliminate glare and protect the eyes from the sun more effectively than a plain smoke tint.

What is the average price for swimming goggles?

Swim goggles cost anywhere from $30 for beginner models to over $80 for high-end models, with an average price of $48 USD. A goggle’s price is based mostly on its name brand, its construction, and the lenses it has.
