FINIS Edge Swimming Fins

Swimming fins are a great tool to improve your freestyle technique. They’re used to increase the intensity of your kick, which helps you make more efficient use of energy and gives better leverage in the water.

The FINIS Edge Swim Fins have been designed for maximum performance, giving you an active workout that builds up endurance, speed, and strength. With its patented blade angle, these fins provide a great workout for all skill levels and are specifically designed to improve technique without compromising your comfort.

If you want to take your fitness level to the next level, then we recommend training fins. They give you more leg muscle activation — which results in greater speed and power — and are extremely helpful in developing proper swimming technique without any additional drag on your body.

FINIS has labeled these as ‘muscle-building training fins,’ so our in-house swimming expert has tried and tested them over the last few weeks. Let’s see what they had to say.

Finis Edge Swimming Fins

Review

The FINIS Edge Swimming Fins are a great addition to any swimmer’s training routine.

It’s clear these fins have been designed to improve technique and give your legs a real workout, as confirmed by our experienced swimmer. This means they can be used for all skill levels, from beginner swimmers to elite athletes in order to build on kick strength and efficiency.

The fins have a comfortable fit so you should be able to wear them for long periods of time without discomfort while you train. Although, depending on foot shape, it is possible some chafing could develop around the ankle strap. Perhaps the use of neoprene socks may be recommended for those who struggle with issues like this.

Finis Edge Swimming Fins Review

Features

The FINIS Edge Swimming Fins include a variety of design elements that make them great for swimmers, especially those looking to improve their kick strength.

The fins were tested by our swimming expert who used them in both pool and open water settings. In both settings, they found that these fins provided an excellent kick that was easily adjustable based on their own personal preferences.

A top tip from our review team: as the foot pocket is designed quite narrowly in order to provide a snug fit, users with a wide or long arched foot may prefer a size up to avoid uncomfortable pressure points.

Finis Edge Swimming Fins Features

Strap

The silicon strap on the FINIS Edge Swimming Fins may be pulled back by placing your finger between your heel and the strap. Our reviewer reckons that beginner swimmers could benefit from the addition of a grab handle at the rear. This would make it easier to put on and take off the fins while still feeling secure.

Blade

The FINIS Edge Swimming Fins include a patented blade angle that ensures a naturally broad contact point between the fin and the ridge of the foot; the increased surface area allows you to get the most out of each kick cycle with both comfort and stability.

The under-side rails on the fin act as catchment walls, channeling water off the underside of the foot. This also provides resistance on the up-kick and activates micromuscles in the hamstrings and glutes which can be useful for swimmers who want to focus their strength training on individual leg muscle groups.

A final detail worth mentioning is that the underside of the foot pocket is ribbed in order to prevent slipping and ensure stability if you are walking around the poolside or a boat deck.

Price/ Quality Ratio

The FINIS Edge Swimming Fins are a little more expensive than than other training fins on the market today, but there’s a good reason for this. For around $70, these fins are well made with high-quality silicone which makes them incredibly durable, especially as there are no loose parts such as buckles that can fall off.

Do we recommend them?

They’re great for all levels of swimmers and even beginners will have no problem using them, although we have seen some reports of blistering. We recommend getting yourself some neoprene socks if you find that blistering is a common problem for you when wearing fins.

The fin blades are wide enough to provide good propulsion and support while swimming in the open water or training in a pool. However, our reviewer did notice that they can be quite floppy after periods of intense training which, while providing some softness and comfort, can end up slowing you down a bit – especially when compared to similar fins on the market such as the Arena Powerfin Pro fins which go for about the same price.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it a better workout to swim with fins?

Fins help you develop leg strength and swim faster. With a stronger kick, you will reduce strain on your shoulders. While enhancing your up-kick, ankle flexibility, general body alignment, and conditioning, training with fins also aids in muscle growth.

Are long or short fins better for swimming?

In order to perform well in the standard swimming styles such as freestyle, backstroke, butterfly we’d recommend training with the short blade. Short blade fins require a quicker, higher kick tempo which helps you develop aerobic endurance while also providing resistance for building leg strength. Short blade fins are ultimately more advantageous for a skilled swimmer.

Our swimmer’s favourite pair overall are the Arena Powerfins although there are other fins such as HEAD’s Energy Swim and TYR’s Sport EBP fins.

Put on your gear if you want to burn a lot of calories! Your fins, swim caps and goggles are the top three pieces of equipment for maximizing calorie burn. Fins significantly raise your heart rate and speed because they activate more muscles while the swim cap and goggle combination, when well fitted will provide you with comfort for prolonged training sessions.

How do I choose training fins?

Choosing a new pair of training fins can be tough with so many different styles and prices on the market.
