Best for Active Preteens, Teens
SOG Specialty Ninja Tactical

The SOG Ninja Tactical Daypack is no average backpack and isn’t really for daily school use. This backpack is geared for kids who are constantly on the move, going on overnights with friends, regularly on the soccer pitch or football field, or planning their next scouts weekend.

Built for adults and kids, this backpack is built with durability and protection in mind. This backpack isn’t for everyone and there are a few drawbacks, but the functionality is hard to beat.

Let’s dive in to the reasons we think this backpack is a green light for your adventurous, active preteen or teen.

This Backpack Is For Your Wild Child

Some kids can go about their business in a typical, single compartment backpack without blinking an eye. These same kids might only do indoor extracurriculars or are well disciplined and make a point to set down their bag with care. This backpack is not for these kids.

This backpack is for older kids and teens who are indoors and outdoors with very little pause on where they set down their things or what the weather will be like. The SOG Specialty Ninja Tactical backpack is made to be thrown without concern and accidentally left out in the heat or cold without questioning if the contents will be safe inside.

Why do we know this backpack is for your rough little hellions? Welp, because we have them in our own home. This backpack is for kids climbing, camping, exploring, practicing sports in the mud and the rain, and needing to bring a variety of supplies and tools with them.

In our review, this backpack was ideal for a day hike, a basic camping weekend, and a muddy soccer practice and, maybe best of all, this backpack stood the test of constantly sloshing, throwing, and weather-be-damned treatment.

Easy Designs

The design options for this backpack are varieties of camouflage, making it easily personalized with patches and used as the child ages without a question about kid-specific fabrics. A new cub scout or elementary school soccer player might get this backpack in elementary school and, thanks to the simple, classic color options, can use this backpack for years without worrying about a character style growing old for them.

A perk– although we haven’t utilized the velcro patch spot on the front of the bag, adult reviewers often noted the ease of adding a work patch.

Quality Fabric, Durability, and Storage

This wouldn’t be a true Ninja Daypack if it wasn’t complete with ideal storage, room for accessories such as water bladders, and super durable fabric. Initially, we didn’t like the single water bottle holder on the side of the bag but once we loaded it with a bladder for exterior access to a water line, we changed our tune.

Moreover, there are so many storage options for a variety of tools and things needed for an active kid. Our regularly packed favorites include: a change of clothes, a first aid kit, snacks, sneakers, school work, and sports equipment.

The downside of the pack’s ability to hold all these things? It can get heavy. Weighing in at more than a pound without anything in it, packing it full for your kid’s busy day of school and practice can add up to hefty load.

Comparing this backpack to other daily use packs like the Jansport, Herschel, or our top-rated Vaschy, it could be considered cumbersome and has a lot going on.

Some kids will be fine using their school backpack for after-school activities or even on a day trip in the mountains with friends. For those kids, this SOG backpack would be overkill.

The Ninja Tactical is heavy and has extra compartments and straps that just aren’t necessary for daily life. Moreover, this backpack is sized for older kids and adults so it’s not a pick for folks looking for a backpack for younger kids.

Price/Quality

The quality of the SOG backpack seems like a great deal, with a price tag just over $30. The durability of the zipper and of the body’s material is impressive. The zipper is thicker than your average zipper and the whole body of the backpack opens wider than most, allowing for more thoughtful packing.

Do We Recommend It

We recommend this backpack for a specific type of kid who is strong, extra adventurous and finds ways to always be outside.

Yes, the backpack is marketed toward kids, but we feel with its weight and tactical design, it is better suited for preteens and teens. This is a high-quality backpack for specialized outdoor, rugged use.
