The Vario is a multipurpose three-season jacket, appropriately named from the root of ‘variability.’ Our reviewer put this jacket through the test in rain and wind while traveling, hiking, and riding a motorcycle – during each activity, the Vario performed well.
Some of our favorite features of the Vario are its ultralight and packable design, its athletic cut, and its ability to dry quickly. On top of that, the Vario is both breathable and durable.
The Vario is available in both men’s and women’s sizing ranging from XS to 3XL for men and XS to 2XL for women. This jacket also comes in tall sizing for the men’s cut. Color options include black, stellar (blue) and mahogany (rusty red) in men’s and black and mahogany in women’s.

My New Go-To Windbreaker
Outdoor Vitals Vario jacket is a three seasons wind and water-resistant jacket, that is actually wind and water resistant!
Our reviewer put Vario’s Ripstop Nylon and water resistance to the test. During a hike, our reviewer slid down a rock into a pool at the bottom of a waterfall – no scratches or tears to the jacket, and the best part, the cellphone was saved thanks to water-resistant fabric. After being completely submerged, the Vario jacket dried completely in a matter of less than 15 minutes. A big win for Vario.
On top of that, the Vario is guaranteed to be complimented anytime you leave the house. Our reviewer received compliments on the Vario at the airport, in restaurants, and on the trail. The slim athletic cut, minimalist hood, and drop back hem make the Vario an attractive looking jacket, unlike some of the more bulky or slick-looking traditional windbreakers.
The womens Vario has a well-fitting cut with stretch to match the wearer.
However, this jacket has an athletic cut, so size up for a more relaxed fit. One of the best features is the back drop hem ensuring that when you sit, the jacket stays put.
Specs and Features Breakdown:
Ultralight, Packable, and Perfect for Layering
The Vario is ultralight, weighing in at only 10 oz. This jacket can be compressed down to the size of a grapefruit, making it easy to pack and lightweight to carry. While rated for three seasons, the Vario is best suited for temperatures above 50 F. With that being said, due to its slim design, the Vario is great for layering.
Our reviewer layered the Vario under a protective motorcycle jacket and loved that it added warmth, but not bulk. The Vario also features thumb loops, which make it easy to put on under other jackets, preventing the sleeves from riding up.
Breathability and Movement
The three most common complaints–things we don’t like–with windbreaker jackets are (1) a constrictive fit, (2) the swooshing noise associated with most water and wind resistant jackets, and (3) the feeling of being trapped in a sauna when wearing a non-breathable jacket.
The Vario has none of these things. The nylon material of the jacket is soft, flexible, and breathable, making it stretch to accommodate movement without noise. Additionally, the jacket features underarm vents that allows air flow so that outside moisture can be repelled, but inside moisture can be let out.
Sustainable and Charitable
The Vario jacket is made of 50% recycled insulation, meaning you can feel good about making a sustainable choice. Outdoor Vitals claims that Vario’s insulation has no impurities in the recycled fibers, sourcing them from a manufacturing company that knows the molecular makeup of the recycled fibers.
Additionally, Outdoor Vitals contributes a portion of their revenues at the end of the year to support Charity: Water.
Price/Quality Ratio:
The Vario is at the high end of water and wind resistant jackets. With that being said, you get what you pay for when it comes to quality. The Vario is considered ultralight gear, weighing next to nothing but not compromising on its intended warmth rating.
The Vario has all the features you look for in a quality jacket without having to sacrifice anything. It is durable, quick-drying, breathable, and stylish. Also, its versatility as both an everyday and outdoor activity jacket means that you will get a lot of wear from the Vario.
Do we recommend it?
It’s an all around yes from this reviewer! Outdoor Vitals Vario jacket is an excellent choice for men and women looking for a three-season jacket that is both wind and water resistant, while also being durable, stylish, and ultralight.
One of the best things about this jacket is its versatility, the athletic cut makes it an attractive jacket to wear every day and its durability will ensure a long life.
