Affordable Pocket Pair

When it comes to binoculars, size is not necessarily proportional to performance. Sometimes, even the smallest ones are more powerful than the biggest. The Occer 12×25 Compact Binoculars is a great example of a lightweight pair of optics that does a pretty decent job.

Adjustable eye cups, manual diopter and center focus work pretty well.

The Occer 12x25s are popular–at least they seem to sell really well–because they have a very appealing price compared to more expensive brands. That immediately draws attention to the question of its quality, and therefore more relevantly, to its usefulness.

Occer 12×25 Compact Binoculars

Overview

The Occer 12×25 Compact Binoculars are lightweight, portable, and affordable. They have a BaK-4 Porro prism system and fully multi-coated lenses, delivering clear images with accurate color reproduction during the day. At dawn and dusk, they perform reasonably well considering their price.

In terms of quality, the image is clear enough to see details of objects and follow their movements 300-450 feet away. A decent image at that too. But there’s some aberration and distortion at the edges that will gnaw at pro users’ needs.

These optics are a decent companion for mid- and long-range observations, such as birding, stargazing, or watching live events and sports. They have a field of view of 273’ at 1,000 yds. With the help of the user-friendly central focus wheel, they help you quickly change the focal depth for tracking different things at different distances.

Handling these optics in the field is quite easy and natural. The rubber armor has a firm grip. The housing can also resist minor shocks but can’t handle heavy beatings, which is fair enough given the affordable price tag. Additionally, it can do away with tiny water drops but not complete submersion in water for a prolonged period.

For convenience, the Occer 12×25 Compact Binoculars include a carrying pouch, binoculars strap, and cleaning cloth. The bag makes it easy for you to store them in a dry place when not in use or carry them wherever your adventure takes you. Meanwhile, the cleaning cloth made of silk makes it easy to wipe the lenses anytime and anywhere. Unlike cotton, this silk cloth leaves no tiny fibers on the lenses.

Image Quality

These binoculars are equipped with a high-resolution BaK-4 Porro prism system and fully multi-coated lens coating. With these features, they deliver a crystal clear viewing experience almost instantaneously. The lenses produce natural colors with little-to-no color distortions. At the same time, they help prevent visual fatigue.

On the other hand, the Occer 12×25 Compact Binoculars’ edge-to-edge clarity leaves much to be desired. The field of view blurs around the edges significantly, which is no surprise for binoculars in this price range.

While these optics work well enough during the day, they are not very useful as night-time optics. Nonetheless, color distortions are hardly noticeable during the daytime.

These optics are suitable for observing objects at mid-range and long distances. Particularly, they are a decent choice for birding and a bit of stargazing. They may not be as powerful as high-end models, but they provide a far better viewing experience than the naked eye.

One of the major issues with the Occer 12×25 Compact Binoculars is magnification. Occer says they have a 12x magnification, but this appears to be overstated. If you know your binoculars, you will easily realize that they don’t have a power of 12x. They seem to fall somewhere around the 7x to 8x range.

Some online reviewers have complained about the non-alignment of the two lenses leading to double vision, but our pair went through 3 sets of eyes without experiencing this.

Focus Mechanism

With a 273’ field of view at 1,000 yds, these optics are decent enough for birding and watching live events. You can obtain crisp images from a distance with the help of the easy-to-use focus knob. The focus mechanism is smooth and simple to adjust, so you won’t have difficulties locking in your objects.

Moreover, the Occer 12×25 Compact Binoculars’ focus knob is placed in the center. Reaching it and turning works just fine.

Construction Quality and Ergonomics

For a powerful pair of binoculars, these optics are surprisingly compact and lightweight. It is rare to encounter models that claim to have a 12x magnification and weigh less than 9 oz each. The problem with this combination is that it is challenging to stabilize the optics. Shaking will likely trouble you more often than you’d like.

These binoculars are housed in a nonslip rubber armor that has a nice and easy-to-hold grip. They are moderately durable and shockproof, even though they seem too fragile given their size. For some experts, they are no more than mere toys for kids.

However, you can’t use the Occer 12×25 Compact Binoculars when the rain is pouring heavily. You can’t also have them soaked in water. If they get wet or soaked in water for an extended period, water will quickly penetrate the glass construction and render the gear useless. While they are not completely waterproof, they can resist small water droplets.

The foldable eyecups of these binoculars make them suitable for most users, including eyeglass wearers and kids. Moreover, they are made of soft rubber, ensuring you a comfortable glassing experience for prolonged hours. You can easily adjust the eyecups according to your pupil distance, but for some users, these optics’ interpupillary distance (IPD) is not wide enough.

Your eyelashes will hardly touch the eyepieces because these optics have a long eye relief. By keeping your eyes and eyepieces at an apt distance, you can view your objects as clearly and completely as possible.

Portability

The Occer 12×25 Compact Binoculars also come with a carrying case that can protect them from the elements when not in use. Thanks to their compact design, you can bring them with ease wherever you go. Indeed, they are an excellent choice for traveling. You can throw them in your backpack or keep them in your glove compartment to always be ready for adventure.

Maintenance

Remember to put these optics in a clean and dry place when not in use, especially if you want them to last long. While they are of decent quality considering the price point, they can’t take that much beating. You’d want to handle them with as much care as possible.

Occer has upgraded the lens cloth and neck strap that come with these optics. The strap is wide enough for you to have it around your neck for extended periods without being fatigued. Meanwhile, the lens cloth is now made of high-quality silk. You will no longer struggle with tiny cotton fibers remaining on the lenses after wiping them.

However, there is much room for improvement for the Occer 12×25 Compact Binoculars’ neck strap. It comes loose pretty quickly, which is somehow understandable for a pair of optics this cheap.

Use the provided lens cloth when cleaning these optics. A wet cloth is likely to compromise them.

Conclusion

These Occer binoculars are ideal for beginners and occasional enthusiasts. Since they are lightweight and affordable, they are also suitable for kids.

The Occer 12×25 Compact Binoculars are pretty easy to maintain, especially with the help of the silk cleaning cloth that comes with the purchase. However, keep in mind that they are not waterproof. If you are not taking them to harsh terrains or wet environments, then you have nothing to worry about.

In terms of quality and performance, these optics are quite average. They provide bright and clear images with minimal color distortions, especially when there is good lighting. Thanks to the easy-to-use and strategically placed focus wheel, obtaining a laser-sharp focus is also easy.

These optics have foldable rubber eyecups, which are comfortable enough not to strain you even during prolonged glassing. You can pack them in the carry bag to keep them safe and clean when you’re done.

The Occer 12×25 Compact Binoculars are suitable for various applications that don’t require high-end features. You can take them birding, hiking, stargazing, or watching your favorite artists perform in a jampacked arena.

What should I look for in compact binoculars?

When looking for compact binoculars that perform well in the field, magnification is one of the most important factors to consider other than the actual weight of the product. Models with a magnification of 8x or 10x are the best choices. They strike a good balance between power and weight.

Nonetheless, there are a few exceptions, such as the Occer 12×25 Compact Binoculars. They have a 12x magnification at only less than 9 oz.

Some of the best compact binoculars on the market today include the following:

What are the best binoculars for birding?

Birding binoculars are common. They usually fall in the mid- and full-size categories. Particularly, 8×32 and 8×42 models are popular choices among avid birdwatchers. 8x is preferable to 10x and 12x because it has a broader field of view, which makes it easy to spot birds from a distance. However, that doesn’t mean that 10x and 12x optics are not at all excellent choices for birding.

Lens coatings also play a role since they optimize the binoculars’ ability to gather light and prevent glares. Fully multi-coated lenses are preferable for birding because they have multiple anti-reflection coating layers on all air-to-glass surfaces, giving you the best possible views of your favorite tiny creatures.

The following are some of our favorite birding binoculars:
