While not necessarily a budget option, the DJI Osmo Action 3 is an ideal choice for those looking for a slightly more affordable (but just as reliable and feature-packed) alternative to the best GoPros.
Moving away from its predecessor’s modular design, the DJI Osmo Action 3 goes back to the conventional design of the first Osmo Action. The similarities with the original end there though, with the DJI Osmo Action 3 sporting a lot of the same features as the upgraded Action 2, albeit with a few more improvements. It has the same 155-degree lens as the Action 2, with an f/1.8 aperture and a 12 MP sensor. It also deals with heat better and has better battery life.
The Action 3 has a convenient Quick-Release Adapter Mount, excellent audio quality, and an updated RockSteady 3.0 EIS that all make the camera ideal for vlogging and a wide variety of outdoor sports.
Things we like:
-
Robust build with class-leading waterproofing
-
Reliable even in temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius
-
More expansive FOV than most of its competition
-
Superior battery life than its predecessor
-
Excellent mounting system and dual touchscreens make it great for vlogging
Things we don't like:
-
Doesn't perform well under low-light conditions
-
Video and image quality isn't as good as most of its competition
Moreover, it’s waterproof for up to 16 meters without a Waterproof Case (that’s 6 meters more than the HERO10 and 11), which makes it suitable for watersports as well. If you’re using your Osmo Action 3 exclusively for underwater footage, you’ll want to invest in the Osmo Action Diving Accessory Kit–which includes the DJI Floating Handle and a Waterproof Case.
The DJI Mimo app allows users to control the camera through their phone. You can take photos, create live video feeds, and do simple edits all through your phone. If you want something with more editing functions, we’d recommend using the LightCut app (also optimized for DJI devices), which offers an AI-assisted one-tap editing feature as well as ready to use templates.
While the DJI Osmo Action 3 does not have best-in-class video and image quality, it has pretty much everything you’re looking for in an action camera and is worth considering if you need to save a little money.
