Most Stylish

The Herschel fanny pack joins a growing list of fashionable bags. The Fourteen is a hip bag that can easily be worn as a small, crossbody carrier.

It’s a pack that has the quality and just enough organization to match practical value with whatever fashionable appreciation individuals will place on the numerous colorways.

We found almost irrelevant issues with the design during testing and as a daily accessory for phones, keys, purells and other random, smaller items.

If there was one design flaw we didn’t like, it was the way the double zips didn’t easily seal the bag when closed at the left end of the zipper track. Check out the image of this and further explanation below.

Otherwise, the Fourteen fanny pack by Herschel is pretty cool and useful.

Herschel Fourteen Fanny Pack

As Subtle as it is Simple

The Fourteen has a great size for phones, a notebook, mints, etc. It’s big enough for items that don’t easily fit in pockets but small enough to complement rather than stand out.

Honestly, the only true problem we experienced was the zipper not easily closing completely. The inner seam sticks out right where the zipper ends its run and makes it so it stays just a tad open unless you push the seam down.

Other than that it’s a simple useful belt bag.

Herschel’s fanny pack lets you pick from various color designs to compliment your style. This belt bag is available in solid colors like pink, grey, navy blue, grey, red, and black-yellow combo.

The Fourteen fanny packs come in several pretty cool colorways: camouflage, tie-dyed, polka-blue, and summer floral, for example.

Each of these waist pack models has its trademark lining, white with red stripes. Its soft fabric will keep your phone scratch-free. It’s a feature missing in JanSport Fifth Avenue Fanny Pack.

Comparing to the Competition

The Fourteen is a smaller pack that has utility as a belt bag without being too cumbersome. The material reminds of Fjallraven’s Kanken in terms of durability and toughness, though not quite in terms of that pleasant, canvas feel. The nylon on this fanny is a bit more rough, consistent with Herschel’s other bags (the Novel Duffle, for example).

This Herschel fanny pack is also not equipped with a clip to keep your keys. And since there are no other pockets, you’ll need to dig your way under everything else to get your keys.

See the easy access key clip that Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack has in its front pocket.

The strap is slightly thin and secured by a 3-pronged buckle. It’s appropriate for its capacity, but it wears out quickly. There’s so much excess material on the belt as well.

And even though it’s got a plastic clip to keep any excess belt, it’s not reliable. The extra strap keeps falling out of the clip. It’s better to opt for a belt bag that has elastic strap keepers. Maxtop Fanny Pack and Champion Signal Fanny Pack have it. Slip the excess belt into the loop, and you’re good to go.

Herschel Fourteen Waist Pack is a no-fuss stylish belt bag. But in exchange for some features thrown out of the window.

What can you put in it?

Yes, Herschel Fourteen Waist Pack can only accommodate 1 liter. But it gives you enough space to pack up more than your wallet and keys. There are no pockets and dividers inside the main compartment. Meaning the entire bag is a space to occupy.

But if you like–or need–extra pockets, this is not the one for you.

Stash your iPhone, wallet, passport, and hand sanitizer. But keep in mind to be cautious when putting important stuff into this Herschel fanny pack. Back pockets are missing, and there’s no zippered inside pocket either. It’s best to place your belt bag where you can see it.

If you plan to tour crowded areas, you might want to invest in a belt bag with security rear pockets. Maxtop Fanny Pack or Sportsnew Fanny Pack will get the job done.

As for this Herschel fanny pack, use it for work, school, or on your quick stop by the café for some ice cream and cake. It’ll fit a mini tissue pack, keychain-sized flashlight, perfume bottle, small comb, Bluetooth headset, and mask.

This belt bag is good company for mundane everyday living. Not the best choice for a secured waist pack.

How does it compare to other fanny packs?

Made with polyester, this Herschel fanny pack shares the same fabric with JanSport Fifth Avenue Fanny Pack. It’s waterproof per thread, but not after it’s weaved. There are teeny-tiny gaps between fibers where water droplets can pass through. But this belt bag from Herschel has a striped lining inside. It adds another layer to keep your items dry.

The stitching could also use some improvement. It doesn’t look clean as it could be, which might compromise your waist pack’s durability over time.

Herschel uses YKK zippers on their bags. If you still don’t trust YKK’s quality, you need to get out of your cave. They’re the goods.

But this Herschel fanny pack only has a single zipper pull. Meaning you can use it as a shoulder bag with no problem. But as a sling bag or crossbody fanny pack? You’re limited to your left shoulder only on account of how the pack opens up to the same side.

The Company

Herschel Supply Co. is a Vancouver-based company that launched in 2009. They’re famous for the durability, utility, and design of their products. The company focuses on giving modern-day travelers reliable gear for their trips.

Maybe it’s a Herschel fanny pack for your journey through the national park.

Maybe a carry-on suitcase for your holiday in the Far East.

Herschel is specifically known for its backpacks.

They have a limited lifetime warranty for all their products. This policy starts after you buy the item. But their luggage and apparels items only cover a five-year warranty.

Herschel also offers a collection of green goods at their Eco product line. That sounds great, but it doesn’t reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

It’s two steps behind the efficient steps by Cotopaxi and Patagonia. They’re neutralizing plastic and chemical use during production. Not for a collection but for all their products. With more humanitarian efforts too. To give a helping hand to the less fortunate, providing them with stable jobs.

Herschel is a world-class brand with a wide variety of durable and stylish products. It’s still one of the most famous brands around. Although, there’s nothing much beyond what they offer to the market.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I wash my Herschel fanny pack?

Want to keep your Herschel Fanny Pack in the best condition? Skip dry cleaning and machine wash.

Stick to spot cleaning if possible and use mild soap only.

Brush or anything with bristles is a big no-no. A sponge or any soft fabric will help avoid scratching the surface of your Herschel fanny pack. Spot clean in a circular motion and once the dirt is gone, wipe it the same way with a damp fabric to remove any soap residues left.

Once done, hang it upside-down with the zipper open and let it air dry. Any direct contact with heat, a.k.a. sunlight might affect the color of your Herschel fanny pack.

How to wear a Herschel fanny pack?

There are countless styles to wear your Herschel fanny pack. Wear it the traditional way by the waist, whether on your front, side, or back. Hang it by your shoulders the crossbody way. Carry it like your favorite handbag. Or keep it tucked near your chest.

Herschel Fourteen Waist Pack can add more twists to your daily workwear, over your layer of a blazer, or match up with your cargo pants. Maybe choose a belt bag with a solid bright color to stand out in your casual neutrally-hued attires.

Your bum bag can also add texture to your jumpsuit and dress.

It can’t go wrong with your white tees and jeans either.
