Shark Eaten by Giant Moray Eel

Sharks are usually the apex predator in the ocean, but this white tip reef shark meets its match. In this incredible video, you’ll see a shark fighting for its life against a Giant Moray eel. In terms of sheer mass, the giant moray is the largest of all eels in the ocean and it is able to feed on prey as robust as small sharks while enjoying the poisonous lionfish when it can get its maw on it.

This shark may be endangered by shark finning and overfishing, but this little white-tip forgot what one of his natural enemies looks like. While its cousin, the slender giant moray eel can reach up to 13 feet, giant morays can reach a length of up to 10 feet (ca. 3 meters).

It is difficult to put to a right scale the size of the shark, but I have been diving couple of times in Shark Scramble in Chiba Japan, and those sharks are very strong and you can hardly hold a small baby one. I can imagine what a grip that eel should have had… Great video…
This video perfectly captures what makes sharks so fascinating. Not only are they visually stunning, they’re also freakishly tough.

Great work! Where was this filmed?
Yes it’s amazing to see these two animals in such a fight, and the ending really made my day. I thought is was a goner for sure!
Don’t get your fingers too close! There are stories where a moray eel bites off a finger…
Wow this is such a great video! I’m so glad the shark makes it out alive! What a fight and almis all the way down!
Wow this is awesome! And how the sharks swims off afterwards, clearly really beaten up. It’s amazing that it survives this. I will reconsider how close I get to a moray eel next time. They are not for fun 🙂
