Center Console Champ: Boston Whaler Outrage 380
All the Boston Whaler Boats We've tested
The Boston Whaler Outrage 420 is a statement. It’s the new flagship and, after 50 years of doing things well, seems like the company is showing off everything they do right.
This is an amazing day boat for fishing and entertaining a lot of people very comfortably. It’s an offshore center console boat that rides more like a yacht. Its teak details and elegant paneling also make it look more like a yacht.
A full beam houses a sizeable birth with a full head, shower and nice galley. It’s worth looking at the options too because there are quite a few customizations available.
The first Outrage was introduced by Boston Whaler in 1971. It was a solidly built, virtually unsinkable center console fishing vessel that still cruises the waters today. In 2014, the Outrage 420 was launched–BW’s flagship.
The 420 is the culmination of Boston Whaler performance with the added luxury details that appeal more to entertainment than to offshore fishing. But its performance aspects are undeniable in this, the anniversary edition.
Starting with the propulsion, the triple outboard Mercury 600s are amazing. They are fully serviceable from the top of the outboards and they only need check and service after 1000 hours.
Without the tower, these FourStrokes can get this Outrage up to 64 mph and will reach 60 with the added weight and drag of the secondary helm station.
Raymarine screens with multifunction options sporting a really nice and streamlined operating system give a complete picture and make driving intuitive. The digital throttle and shifts are made by Mercury Marine and the Skyhook function also makes maneuvering in the marina very responsive.
The spacious cockpit has a retractable sunshade, helping fully enclose it with climate control. The outdoor cleaning counter with sink has a fridge and a livewell (option to switch out livewell for an additional fridge) and the whole unit can close and turn into a bench for 3.
All details are like a luxury car with bells and whistles everywhere, including camera mounts on the cockpit roof for capturing the moment when a marlin is reeled in.
Customization and versatility best describe this bow lounge section, maxing out the amount of passenger seating in different configurations for both cruising and relaxing. And there’s a self-draining, insulated cooler under the bow couch.
The optional tower has a lounge and secondary helm station with a minimized, but comprehensive instrumentation. The view while driving the boat from here is amazing. But climbing up here is not easy. In bigger waves, it’s probably dangerous and might be best left out if the main cruising grounds are the choppy and roiling Gulf of Mexico.
Storage space under the gunnels is intelligently taken advantage of. There’s space for a selection of rods, tackle and warm weather gear.
Awesome comfort in the birth where the lighting highlights the elegance of the interior design. There’s a bit of natural light too–though not all that much. From the birth, it looks more like a cabin cruiser.
From the inside to the out, the Outrage 420 is highlighted by beautiful paneling where the subtle Boston Whaler brand name is displayed and projects pride of place.
Perhaps with other brands, this might be arrogance, but after 50 years with the type of recognition Boston Whaler commands, it projects prestige that attracts even non-fishing boating enthusiasts.

Although not the most versatile and feature-rich boat from Boston Whaler, the Montauk 210 does provide serious anglers with a functional, safe, and comfortable inshore and offshore fishing platform. This is a low-maintenance, safe and solid center console designed for a quick launch, good fun, easy hosing down and go experience.
The flagship of the Montauk line boasts a spacious layout featuring a forward casting deck as well as two rear casting platforms. The latter can be converted into individual seats. Plus, rod holders throughout the boat and a forward insulated fishbox.
Standard features on this model are indeed very few, so in order to fully enjoy this Montauk, you’re going to have to add a package that’s most tailored to your activities.
Some options include the Fishing Package (94-quart cooler seat, rod holders, and tackle drawers), the Deluxe Leaning Post (30-gallon livewell, rod holders, and raw-water washdown), and for added comfort and versatility, an enclosed head with pump-out and a big bow pad.
There’s a little head under the console for a modicum of luxury on this otherwise functional-first vessel.

Fishermen looking for a sleek, compact, and easy-to-use inshore and offshore fishing boat, should definitely take a look at the Montauk 170. It’s a center console craft that drills down on best practices
Just like the Montauk 210, this model doesn’t come loaded with features. So depending on your on-water demands, you might need to add a few amenities here and there. However, most fishing needs should be covered by her standard features.
This BW center console comes standard with a large forward casting platform, under which you’ll find the new integrated forward fishbox with overboard drain—add the optional bow cushion and turn this area into a nice and comfy sun lounger.
The reversible helm seat is, unfortunately, the only seat that comes standard—the livewell under the helm seat is also optional.

A Quick History of the Boston Whaler
The first Boston Whaler boat was a styrofoam and epoxy-built v-shape hulled boat constructed in 1956 after years of tinkering with design changes. The goal was to make a light vessel that could run fast and safe, inspired by the Hickman Sea Sled, which had an inverted vee planing hull that has also given rise to the catamaran designs.
Richard “Dick” Fischer and his friend, naval designer C. Raymond Hunt took advantage of polyurethane composites that were lighter and stronger than classic wood designs. In 1958 the Boston Whaler was sold as an affordable, high-performance vessel that became quite popular quite rapidly.
Since 1958 different types of Boston Whaler models have been produced, always with quality and performance at the forefront of their ethos. The company has a commercial section that manufactures boats for the U.S. Coast Guard and supplies vessels to naval customers worldwide.
But their recreational models continue to show a company that can innovate and inspire boaters, cruisers, fishermen and families alike.

Because of their innovative Unibond construction—where a buoyant closed cell foam is poured between the hull and deck to form a single unbreakable unit—Boston Whaler boats possess exceptional strength, buoyancy, and the legendary unsinkability.
This heavy-duty foam core construction is what allows these vessels to remain afloat even when sawed in half or completely swamped.

They produce a variety of vessels that meet any style and need, including side consoles, center consoles, dual consoles, and walkarounds.
