When we think of fun in the sun, chilling under a palm tree, or hitting that summer music festival, there’s only one pair of shades that comes to mind, the Woodies Polarized Walnut Wood sunglasses.

Rough-sea approved and made from eco-friendly material, this is one of the coolest sunglasses on the market right now–and one of our favorites too!

They boast a clear frame, which is very popular at the moment, polarized anti-reflective lenses that are also UV-protected, and their signature wood temples, which are handmade from real walnut wood.

These shades are pretty well-crafted, they fit nicely, and do a great job at filtering the sun while also providing amazing clarity. They’re also super stylish and affordable.

One of the coolest things we found about the Woodies is how much thought the brand has put into the details and product presentation. At one of the arms, you’ll find a “See you at the beach” carving and besides the carrying case and lens cloth that most brands include with the sunglasses, they also send you a guitar wood pick.

Quay sunglasses of Australia are something of an outlier in the eyewear industry. These stylish and lightweight shades are worn by celebs and are distinctive for their round reflective lens.

They cover your eyes generously and nicely keep the glare off with crisp viewing thanks to the reflective coating. They are non-polarized but seem to have the same effect nonetheless.

Be aware that the color brown for the lens actually describes the sandy reflection more than it means anything resembling kaki or paper baggish. Quay sunglasses do eyewear well and the Koshas prove it.

This contemporary take on shaded eyewear are quite popular these days. They feature those trendy and highly popular mirrored lenses you’ve probably seen around town and all over Instagram.

These SOJOS shades come with a metal frame, silicone nose pads, and have non-polarized but UV-protected mirrored lenses.

Despite their low price tag, they offer amazing quality and style. However, we found that they’re more for fashion than for functionality, as both the lenses and the top metal part are rather reflective. So driving with them on can be a tad distracting.

Still, a cute pair of sunglasses for such an affordable price.

If you’re a fan of the Ray-Ban Erikas but are the kind of person who is constantly losing or breaking your sunglasses, here’s a more affordable and equally fashionable alternative, the SUNGAIT Vintage Round sunglasses.

These are essentially a Ray-Ban copy by a company outside Luxottica’s stable. They feature a metal frame, non-polarized round lenses that are also UV-protected, and a wide nose bridge for added comfort.

Overall, a nice-looking pair of shades, good enough for hanging out by the pool and the beach, taking pictures and looking cool, but they’re not suitable for driving or using your phone—they do catch a glare from the sun pretty easily and will probably give you a headache when reading from a screen. Yet, cute shades for a great price.

Great for outdoor activities such as cycling, running, fishing, skiing. The Torege Sports Sunglasses features a polycarbonate rimless jacket frame design, polycarbonate lens, along with a soft rubber nose pad. The lenses are scratch-resistant and UV-protected and one of them is polarized.

The best feature of this pair is that it comes with 3 interchangeable lenses. The main one (the PC Revo lens) is colorful, reduces glare and improves contrast, the yellow one was designed for nocturnal activities as it enhances contrast, while the black one is polarized and it provides glare reduction, which is ideal for driving and other activities.

They’re very lightweight which makes them highly suitable for outdoor activities. They also come with a ventilation system on the side which prevents them from fogging.

All the lenses are 100% UV400 protection coated, which blocks harmful UVA and UVB rays, but read carefully the manual as it can be a bit tricky to assemble and disassemble them.

Also, we’re not so sure about the polarization of the black lens. Still, an amazing pair of sunglasses for such a low cost.

Sunglasses | Buyer’s Guide

Buying a pair of sunglasses is not as simple as it seems. Getting those shades at the gas station or the grocery store might be fun and all, but you really should think twice before doing so.

A wrong set of shades can be extremely harmful to your vision. And in case you buy a poorly made pair, chances are they won’t last very long before the arms snap or the joints bend, causing them to hang crookedly across the bridge of your nose.

What is really interesting is the fact that most sunglasses in the world are either produced by or owned outright by one company. Luxottica of Italy is a monster responsible for well-known brands as well as lesser known brands.

Luxottica’s extreme market share means that prices aren’t always fairly set. In this guide we sought to find the sunglasses that represent the best value in terms of quality, a feat made difficult when different sunglasses are appealing to different people for different reasons.

So here are the main things you should consider before buying a pair of sunglasses:

UV protection

As we’ve just pointed out, this is the most essential factor to consider, since ultraviolet rays are as damaging to your skin as they are to your eyes.

For that reason, always look for sunglasses with either the 100% UV protection or UV400 labeling. This last one means that all wavelengths up to 400 nanometers, including both UVA and UVB rays will be blocked.

Face Shape

Every face is different and although you’re totally free to choose whatever sunglass design you want to wear, there is a way to find a pair that works well with your face shape and complements your features.

So how do you pick the best sunglasses for your face shape?

There are four main face shapes: oval, round, heart, and square. First, you need to find out which one is yours. Simply look in the mirror or have a friend or a family member help you figure that out.

A good rule of thumb is that round faces (oval and round) go well with angular frames while angular faces (heart and square) go well with round frames.

Lenses

Sunglasses lenses are made primarily using two materials: glass and polycarbonate.

So which one is better, glass or plastic lenses?

The clear winner here is plastic lenses. They are highly resistant to impact, therefore more long-lasting and safer for kids, lighter, more affordable, more effective in shielding your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays, as well as more comfortable to wear over long periods of time.

However, glass lenses do come with some advantages too. They’re more resistant to scratching than plastic—although you can always apply an anti-scratch coating to your polycarbonate lenses—and they also provide the highest optical quality there is.

Polarized vs Non-polarized

Both of them do a great job in decreasing sunlight intensity. However, the difference between polarized and non-polarized lenses is that the former also reduce glare and provide sharper contrast, which results in increased visual clarity and comfort—which make them ideal for driving and water activities.

Why are Ray-Bans so expensive?

Aside from the fine craftsmanship and high-quality materials such as durable frames and polarized glass lenses, when you pay for a pair of Ray-Bans, you are also paying for the designer label. When Luxottica bought the label, they increased the price further. Hence why they are so expensive.
