Can’t decide what beach chair to get or how much to spend on one? You should take a look at the RIO BEACH 4-Position Backpack Beach Chair. It’s an affordable option that brings portability, comfort and some simple features to the table.

The simplicity of its design makes it effortless to use and transport. If you’re searching for a backpack beach chair that returns more than its tag, it might be for you. It’s an appealing option for anyone who prioritizes portability without throwing sturdy construction out the window.

The RIO BEACH 4-Position Backpack Beach Chair is not perfect. Some might want a full recliner or a built-in cooler bag. But for those who find it’s the ideal choice, they’ll enjoy all its simple, yet smart features.

We took this backpack beach chair for some test driving, and after getting some milage out of it, we found it deserving of its place as one of the best.

Laid Back Beach Fun

We know how stressful it is to haul your items from your car to the beach, and carrying your beach chair tends to be a demanding task because of its awkwardness. Backpack beach chairs make sense for this reason.

It’s a refreshing, easy-to-use, sturdy model with backpack straps to amp up its portability. You won’t be disappointed with how comfy it is either. The lace-up design allows the fabric to adapt to your body while also alleviating stress on the material.

This RIO backpack beach chair held up well with 240 lbs. weight capacity. Within its price point, it’s one of the most durable and convenient models.

Construction and Design

Get a durable backpack beach chair that can withstand rusting and up to 240 lbs. of weight. RIO BEACH 4-Position has a classic look, with a refreshing blue/white/green stripes combo.

The refreshing colorway matches the beach environs.

The colorway gives a calm ambiance for summer temps, but we hope there are more color options on the way. Its 600D polyester material is sturdy, paired with a rust-proof aluminum frame for excellent construction. Beach chairs with solid fabrics are still more long-lasting than mesh ones like Cascade Mountain and Terralite Portable (besides, they’re thin and prone to punctures). Some customers complain about how the material ripped quickly, but we didn’t bump into that problem while testing the RIO backpack beach chair.

The lace-up construction stretches according to your body to give you a comfortable and laid-back experience. The same comfort-oriented design is in Bliss Hammocks Zero, while Tommy Bahama Backpack Chair and Rio Beach Classic do not have this, putting more stress on the fabric.

The lace-up design reduces stress on the fabric.

It can hold up to 240 lbs. of load. That’s the average weight capacity for most beach chairs. We recommend KingCamp Low Sling, STRONGBACK Elite, and STRONGBACK Low Gravity if you need more than that. All of them have a carrying capacity of 300 lbs.

RIO BEACH 4-Position Backpack Beach Chair is easy to use. Release the buckle at the top, unfold it, and it’s ready, which means no time-consuming setups like what we had to deal with when we used the Sports Brella Recliner. And although it’s not as compact as the MOON LENCE Outdoor or Coleman’s Utopia Breeze, the backpack straps make it easy to transport.

rio-beach-4-position-folded
Not the most compact, but still very portable.

This RIO backpack beach chair is at the heavier end of models at 8 lbs. Yes, it’s heavy, but it’s a worthy bargain compared to super-lightweight, cheaply-built and featureless alternatives. And again, the backpack carry option (more on that in a bit) is a stress-saving portability quirk.

Overall, RIO BEACH Position Backpack Beach Chair serves you with a comfortable, portable, and pretty durable construction. It’s one of the most reliable models we tested. It’s not the one who owns the spotlight, but it proved worth the investment after assessment. However, it might not fit people with a big frame since it’s on the slim end.

Features

This RIO BEACH backpack beach chair comes with essential features to help you relax for an all-in kickback beach time. Not over-packed to keep it lightweight, but still jammed enough to give you a fantastic time by the shores.

4 Reclining Positions

RIO BEACH backpack beach chair has four reclining options. Adjust on the fly without worries with the tilt lock keeping each level secured.

Rio Beach 4 Position Reclining Position
The tilt lock protection at the hinge ensures that you won’t flip over accidentally.

Enjoy your day at the beach and change your backpack beach chair’s leveling. Although it can’t lay flat and turn into bed as Tommy Bahama Beach Chair or RIO GEAR Classic 5, it’s better than bucket-style beach chairs like MOON LENCE Outdoor, Terralite Portable, and Nice C Ultralight.

Headrest

This backpack beach chair from RIO serves you with a comfy and adjustable pillow. You can calibrate its height accordingly via the Velcro. A headrest is a must-have if you want a truly relaxing time at the beach. Not a fan of headrests? Detach it, and it’s set. And if you prioritize a built-in pillow, you might want to skip beach chairs like Cascade Mountain, Nice C Low Beach Camping, and Coleman Utopia Breeze.

Rio Beach 4 Position Velcro Tabs
Adjust your pillow easily using the Velcro tabs at the back.

If your beach getaway feels incomplete without sneaking in some zzzzs, you need a RIO BEACH 4-Position Backpack Beach Chair in your artillery.

Armrests

Another perk to help you unwind, the armrests also work as protection whenever you recline/decline your backpack beach chair. We appreciate the smooth-to-touch feel of wooden armrests like in RIO BEACH Classic Folding and the comfy padded ones in STRONGBACK Elite. Still, the simplicity of this RIO backpack beach chair is not disappointing either. We also didn’t have any hassle with the pinch points for leveling, like catching our finger in the process.

Bottle Holster

The bottle holder is okay-ish, not the best, but not that bad. It’s got a zipper to secure your drink in place. We managed to fit in a Hydro Flask 16 oz. Wide Mouth, and it covers halfway. It will work fine for tumblers with a lid, but cups and glasses? It’ll spill since it tends to tilt sideways.

The holster works ok, but it’s not for every drinkware.

If you have a taller or bulkier water bottle like Nalgene, it’s wise to opt for beach chairs with bigger pockets like Coleman Oversized Quad or see Picnic Time Fusion with a proper table and cup holder.

In general, your small to medium insulated water bottle will sit safely in this backpack beach chair’s holder.

Backpack Storage

Another feature we like about RIO BEACH 4-Position Backpack Beach Chair is its extra storage space. You’ll find it at the back with an overhanging flap and two quick-release buckles as safety. It’s an excellent spot for your snorkeling gear and other beach items like sunscreen, chapstick, beach towel, and a fresh change of clothing.

The back compartment was a convenient add-on.

Coleman Utopia Breeze has its take on this, but it’s not as spacious as RIO BEACH 4-Position Backpack Beach Chair.

Backpack Straps

The adjustable backpack straps proved easy to use. Once you have collapsed your RIO beach chair, they hide underneath so they won’t get in your way. There’s a bit of annoyance once it catches sand, but a little shake-off will do the trick.

Bring your RIO BEACH 4-Position Backpack Beach Chair anywhere without tiring your arms carrying and dragging it to the beach. It’s a notable edge over bulky competitors like Bliss Hammocks Zero. You’ll have a hard time hauling that one from your car to the beach if you’re a small person like one of our gear experts (at 5’1″) since there’s no carrying handle at all.

Rio Beach 4 Position Backpack Straps
Backpack straps keep your hands free.

We would like to see only a few things to improve this backpack beach chair. A towel bar would be handy like we experienced with RIO Gear Classic 5 and the Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair. A canopy would also be beneficial once the sun’s blazing hot. We found it practical after testing Bliss Hammocks Zero and Sports Brella Recliner. But beach umbrellas are also handy and good for including any company you have.

But again, considering how lightweight and portable this RIO backpack beach chair is, the trade-off of some features didn’t make it any less pleasing to use.

Conclusion

RIO BEACH’s Backpack Beach Chair is justly-priced for around $60. It doesn’t possess any extravagant features or over-the-top setups to make it look cooler/outdoorsy more than it actually is.

The robust build and simplicity of its design made its ease of use its main asset compared to any backpack beach chair. Choose from 4 levels, recline/decline quickly and safely, carry it without tiring yourself (backpack carry) and make more memories by the beach. It might not be an excellent option for big people, but it’s a great backpack beach chair for those who find it a good fit.

It’s a wise investment whether it’s for your me-time, a romantic sunset with your person, or an all-day fun day by the shores. It saves extra space in your beach wagon for other gear with the convenience of backpack carry.
