Obviously, with Mac Sports’ outdoor gear, reliability and durability is almost always expected; so how, exactly, do they improve on a tried and tested beach wagon design?

Well, the Mac Sports Double Decker Wagon boasts a two-tiered design. This allows for more versatility when it comes to carrying your gear, with the bottom shelf for less compact items (such as tents, collapsible chairs, canopies, and even outdoor cooking equipment), and the upper basket for everything else.

Due to its versatility, it is clear that the Mac Sports Double Decker Wagon is a folding cart for rugged campers and casual beachcombers alike.

That said, like all bestselling folding carts, the Double Decker does have a few kinks here and there, which we’ll get into in this review.

Two Levels of Cargo

The Mac Sports Double Decker Wagon, although marketed as a beach cart, is a versatile piece of outdoor equipment. In fact, we think it might even perform better on non-beach settings, which isn’t necessarily a knock on its beach wagon capabilities.

Its two-tier design allows you to carry and organize a wide variety of outdoor equipment. Yup, that means no more stuffing your essentials under sleeping bags or portable canopies–you can stuff all your heavy and/or unwieldy camping gear on the wagon’s lower deck, and save the upper basket for your essentials, food, towels, spare clothes, and even your trusty dry bag if you ever get tired of carrying it.

While it doesn’t have the biggest weight capacity in its segment, the Mac Sports Double Decker is easily foldable and maneuverable, can be set up in a matter of seconds without assembly, and is sturdily built.

We were disappointed, not being able to store longer items like our beach umbrellas. The bottom rack is enclosed so longer items can only stick out by your feet. But this rack is ideal for a case of soda pop or beer.

If you’re looking for a wagon that allows for better organization, will last a good many seasons, and can be taken almost on any trip, then the Double Decker Wagon is definitely worth considering.

Features

In keeping with Mac Sports’ approach when it comes to outdoor equipment, the Mac Sports Double Decker Wagon focuses on what works when it comes to beach wagons, which is reliability and durability. It doesn’t have a lot of fancy innovations, such as different modes of use (like with the Radio Flyer 3-in-1).

That said, it does offer what we believe is an improvement on the classic beach wagon design, which is an additional lower deck/shelf for bulkier items. This additional shelf makes it easy for you to go from, say, an outdoor concert, to a beach party without the hassle of rearranging every single thing you’ve packed.

The wagon’s lower shelf has a foldable outer segment that can be locked into place if you’re loading oversized equipment.

The wagon also has an easily adjustable and lockable contoured handle which allows for a comfortable grip as well as easy maneuvering around uneven surfaces.

Moreover, while they don’t have a locking mechanism, the wagon’s plastic tires with heavy duty rubber tread offer decent maneuverability on almost all types of surfaces (we’ll get into more detail in a bit).

The wagon’s frame is a rust repellant steel with a powder coated surface. That makes is less clammy to the touch as well. Additionally, the wagon’s fabric that makes up the basket has 600D Nylon, giving items loaded into it a decent amount of protection from the elements and stains.

The wagon is easily collapsible with a pulling strap in the middle of the wagon’s upper cart, and the wagon fully folds to only 8 inches thick, which makes it easy to store into any tight space/nook in your car or in your house.

Lastly, the wagon comes with two accessible mesh cup holders (for when you need to drink while hauling), and has a respectable maximum capacity of 150 lbs.

Durability

As with most folding carts in and around the 150-dollar price range, the Double Decker Wagon can withstand a decent amount of abuse. Obviously, if you really set your mind to destroying it, you technically could. That said, the wagon’s powder-coated steel frame makes it fairly strong and highly-resistant to rust and corrosion.

The wagon’s basket is made of 600D fabric, so it’s also highly durable and fairly resistant to the elements. If you constantly load particularly sharp equipment onto the basket, however, or if you regularly overload the basket, these would definitely take their toll on the fabric.

The wheels are made with thick plastic and heavy duty rubber, so they hold up well against a wide variety of surfaces. Moreover, they don’t necessarily require a lot of maintenance. The key thing to remember here is to not overload the wagon (although you could probably get away with a few more pounds, as long as the load is evenly distributed).

As a final note, probably our only concern in terms of durability is the pulling strap to collapse the cart. It’s rather flimsy, and has been known to snap when not handled carefully.

Obviously, this can be reinforced or replaced entirely, but it’s best to be a bit cautious when folding or setting up the wagon if you don’t want to go through the hassle of replacing the strap.

Capacity

While the Mac Sports Double Decker Wagon’s 150-lb weight capacity is serviceable, it’s a bit of a letdown considering it has two whole decks for different types of equipment and considering it banks on its versatility.

In our opinion, when it comes to these types of generalist wagons, weight capacity is just as important as durability. It’s more than a bit disappointing that the Double Decker doesn’t even have a weight capacity that’s near the 200-lb range, as durable as it is.

It’s worth taking into account that the Sekey Collapsible Wagon, which goes for around 130 to 140 dollars (around the same price range as the Double Decker), has a maximum capacity of over 260 lbs. That’s a difference of more than 100 lbs.

Sure, 150 lbs is more than enough for most adventurers, but it is clear that the Double Decker is more for people who put a premium on organizing their gear than anything else.

Portability and Maneuverability

Moving on to portability, the Double Decker Wagon can be collapsed into a mere eight inches, which makes it easy to store in your car, or in a small storage compartment.

At 27 lbs, the wagon does have a bit of heft to it, but this shouldn’t be an issue if you’re storing it in your car; and you’d be dragging the cart anyway when it’s not in storage.

When it comes to maneuverability, the wagon’s plastic wheels rotate 360 degrees and fare well under most surfaces.

We’ve noticed that they tend to struggle on fine sand, though; so you’ll need to put a little bit more elbow grease if you’re hauling your gear on sand.

If you’re looking for something more fit for beach conditions, you might want to look at Mac Sports’ All Terrain Utility Beach Wagon, which has thicker and wider wheels that are better suited for fine sand.

Moreover, the Double Decker’s wheels also don’t come with brakes or any locking mechanism, so it’s a bit tricky keeping it steady even on slight inclines while you’re loading your gear. Also, you’ll have to fold it completely, or have something heavy hold it in place, if you’re storing it in your house if you don’t want it to roll all over the place.

As a final note, while this doesn’t have anything to do with maneuverability, the wagon does have a distinct chemical smell that seems to originate from its wheels–nothing a few washes can’t fix, though.

Value

At approximately 130 to 146 USD, the Mac Sports Double Decker is not the cheapest beach wagon out there. That said, it does offer a lot of bang for your buck with its two separate decks.

As simple as that sounds, an additional deck does a number of things. First, it helps in organizing your gear; second, it helps in distributing the weight of your equipment evenly, which helps in its longevity; finally, it allows you to haul equipment that would otherwise take up all the space in your main cart, like tents, portable canopies, and even kindling for campfires!

Conclusion

Without a doubt, the Mac Sports Double Decker Wagon is definitely worth considering if you’re looking for a beach wagon that offers a more organized approach to hauling your gear. If you’re looking for something reliable, extremely durable (with proper care and storage), and easy to use.

Yes, it is quite limited in its loading capacity, and its wheels could be thicker for better maneuverability on sand, but its two-tiered design makes this wagon among the most versatile in the market.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What kind of wagon is best for the beach?

What you should be looking for in a beach wagon is something that can easily be stored, capable of carrying most (if not all) of your gear and essentials, and is easily maneuverable on fine sand. While a lot of wagons are marketed as beach wagons, we find that those with thicker and wider wheels roll better on fine sand.

Can you put an infant in a wagon?

It depends on the wagon. There are wagons designed specifically to carry infants, such as the Radio Flyer 3-in-1. That said, most beach wagons or folding carts are not designed to carry infants, regardless of their weight capacity–it’s not advisable to put your kids on these types of wagons.

Are wagons useful?

Yes, wagons can be quite handy, especially when you need to haul a lot of gear. Whether you’re spending a day at the beach, or attending an outdoor concert, or simply tending to your garden at home, wagons can spare you the hassle of manually carrying all your gear and essentials.
