Nothing screams Brazil more than soccer, samba, sunny beaches, and a pair of Havaianas. Omnipresent in nearly every Brazilian household and literally throughout the world, this famous piece of footwear has since 1962 evolved from an ordinary local pair of sandals to a worldwide fashion icon.

Made of heavy-duty and super soft rubber with a cushioned insole, the Havaianas were inspired by the traditional Japanese sandal known as Zori, whose soles are made of rice straw. The Havaianas’ signature rice-pattern rubber soles ensure slip-resistance, durability, and comfort—by the way, that’s how you can spot an authentic pair of Havaianas from a knock-off.

Havaianas Men’s Brazil Logo

Just like the colorful and vibrant South American country in which they are designed and handcrafted to this day, the Havaianas are available in a vast array of colors, designs, and prints for men, women, and kids.

A few models, like the one I have, come with a Brazilian flag on the strap, which I think adds a nice touch to them. And for women, in particular, there are models with a higher sole, providing you with a few extra inches without sacrificing comfort and style.

Their top secret rubber recipe is what makes them lightweight and soft as marshmallows while still being highly long-lasting.

Havaianas is a global leader when it comes to sandals. Each year, more than 224 million pairs are sold in over 106 countries—if you don’t own a pair yourself, you probably know someone who does.

I have owned a pair of Havaianas for as long as I can remember. They are so durable and comfortable that the only reason I bought a new one was because I wanted a different color and design.

They have been my go-to pair of flip flops for many years. So I can confirm they are very sturdy yet quite flexible and soft, but what I really like about them is how timeless and stylish they are as well as how seamlessly they transition from the beach to the restaurant to a casual evening. You can pair them with your swimsuit, shorts, jeans, summer dress, or really anything in between.

There’s no doubt you’ll find rubber flip flops for a lower price tag, but it won’t be the high-quality materials they use in the Havaianas construction. I have also used them to take showers at the gym or while traveling and they have effortlessly passed the slip-resistance test.

Another great feature of the Havaianas is how easy they are to clean. The material is easily washable and dries quickly in the sun.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where are Havaianas made?

Havaianas are made in Brazil in two different factories. The first one is located in Campina Grande, in the northeastern state of Paraíba and the second factory is situated in Montes Claros, in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais. Bringing production back to Brazil during the 1990s was part of the success story that led to the brand’s renaissance.

Why are Havaianas so popular?

Havaianas are popular due to their comfort, durability, style but most of all, for evoking that vibrant, sunny, and vacation-like spirit Brazil has become known for. In the 1990s, a design change inverted the sole and ran with 8 monochrome colors that attracted celebrities to use them, which turned them into a fashion commodity.

They are also the great equalizer, worn by both people of wealth as well as those on the opposite end of the economy. Havaianas’ minimalism appeals to all walks of life.

What does Havaianas mean?

The name Havaianas comes from the feminine form of the Portuguese word for “Hawaiians.”

Hawaii served as an inspiration for the brand for being the paradise of sun and sea, which has everything to do with the mood of the sandals. The choice of name was considered ideal, since Havaianas were designed for use in hot climates.

What are Havaianas made from?

Havaianas are made from natural rubber. This makes them relatively stiff at first, but allows them to become ever more comfortable with time, becoming a companion of sorts to the wearer’s feet. The production of Havaianas have become increasingly sustainable to reflect the global shift that both fashion and large brands have been undergoing for some time now.
