20 Best Flip Flops in 2023 Men & Women
Flip flops have always had a relatively bad reputation in the footwear market. Blame the cheaply made models that rip apart soon after you step out the door.
But as fashion evolved, so did flip flops. Now there are hundreds of different types of flip flops that can be worn for every occasion. You name it – Havaianas, Teva, and REEF are just a few of the household names in today’s market. Nike is not to be left behind either.
With an abundance of established flip flop brands arises the question – which pair performs the best? To answer this, you have to figure out price, style, terrain, and comfort. All this depends mainly–besides the brand name–on the materials used. Look out for whether or not they are made of rubber-like Havaianas, cotton like REEFs, or EVA foam like Nike’s. The products on this list are all thong flip flops, but there are some sandal-like alternatives that might be added in time.
Here are 20 of the best flip flops for men and women, to go with your swim shorts.

All the Flip Flops We've tested
Teva Mush Flip Flops are among the most popular for a good reason. The Mush II is a standard, affordable pair that has a durability beyond the price tag. It’s ideal for everyday use and has tested well while camping, sailing and during beach activities.
As far as thong flip flops go, the EVA sole and canvas upper of this Teva make it one of the most comfortable too. The Mush upper sole, a soft proprietary blend of foam, molds to the shape of one’s feet after a few days’ of use.
There’s little speculation required when considering this model. Leather alternatives will always be more appealing options when minimizing sweat is a priority. The treads are not especially impressive–though not mediocre by any means. Otherwise, there’s good value found in these Mush flip flops.

There’s a good reason (or a few) Clarks Breeze Sea flip flops occupy an honorable first place on this list. From versatility and smart design to the orthotic build, it’s not surprising that they continue to sell well three years after their release date.
Clarks shoes are known for their unmatched quality – these flip flops aren’t an exception. They feature a whimsical thong strap that has a hook-and-loop closure for adjusting the fit. This is essential for a pair of shoes you’re planning on wearing long hours at a time.
The EVA-infused construction nicely complements the rugged build. It equips flip flops with the support and the security that doesn’t translate to heavy weight. With over 20 patterns available for purchase, you’re bound to find the pair to your liking.

The Teva Mush II flip-flops for women are an updated classic. Teva has incorporated recycled material making the sole and strap lighter and more sustainable. An additional observation is that the Mush II has a slightly narrower sole too.
But the price is still quite low and the durability seems to be the same–as long as they are the real, genuine product.
Suitable for casual everyday use around the city, they have a foot-forming footbed, low-key straps made of recyclable materials, and lightweight soles. They give just a little bit after constant, initial use. So, order to size or a half step down.
These Teva flip flops are a budget-friendly option for women. Like all flip flops, these won’t provide excessive comfort, but they make up for them on convenience.

Nothing screams Brazil more than soccer, samba, sunny beaches, and a pair of Havaianas. Omnipresent in nearly every Brazilian household and literally throughout the world, this famous piece of footwear has since 1962 evolved from an ordinary local pair of sandals to a worldwide fashion icon.
Made of heavy-duty and super soft rubber with a cushioned insole, the Havaianas were inspired by the traditional Japanese sandal known as Zori, whose soles are made of rice straw. The Havaianas’ signature rice-pattern rubber soles ensure slip-resistance, durability, and comfort—by the way, that’s how you can spot an authentic pair of Havaianas from a knock-off.

The USA-made Reef Phantom flip flops are your go-to sandals for hanging at the beach during hot summer months. They are waterproof, lightweight, and supportive enough to not put a strain on your feet.
The construction of the shoes is smart: the outer layer is made from nubuck whereas the lower part is embedded with a molded EVA footbed. This mix of comfort-inducing features makes flip flops feel snug and secure on your feet.
There’s no break-in period required – the strap is designed to carefully separate your toes without causing blisters. With a medium-density midsole and a high-density outsole, the chances of you losing your shoes along the way are basically non-existent.

Nike Solay thong flip flops offer a modern take on your average summer shoes that aren’t always waterproof or sun-friendly. This is a contemporary pair of sandals that is meant to be worn in warm weather (without sacrificing the fading of the fabric or the ripping of the straps).
The thin straps are made from soft rubber that sits comfortably on your skin and doesn’t irritate it. We know first-hand how frustrating it is to be wearing shoes that cause blisters, so this fabric is a must.
The midsole is injected with a Phylon foam, and the sole is crafted from high-quality rubber. This duo sets you up for success when running errands all day long with zero breaks.

If there’s one sports brand everyone knows, it’s Nike. It has managed to earn a solid reputation for performance and even comfort. So for recovering after your workouts, their Ultra Comfort flip-flops are perfect. It’s no wonder the reviews of these sandals are so good.
They are a true everyday staple that provide the comfort of a pillow due to a built-in memory foam footbed. The straps have leather construction that feel nice on your skin. While most people rave about these flip-flops’ cushioned fit, there are a few shortcomings. The build of the current model doesn’t seem tough enough to withstand the wear and tear of daily use for more than a few months.
But if you love the brand and are interested in getting these Nike flip-flops, our in-depth review will give you every detail about the Ultra Comfort Thong flip-flops.

For a pair of grab-and-go flop flops, the OOFOS Unisex Active Sport model is your best bet. You can use them in every scenario where water might appear in the picture and be confident that they’ll deliver.
Some call them an upgrade from the standard foam-like flip flops and we can agree with that. They excel at absorbing 37% more shock than other flip flops which makes them a perfect match for those struggling with shoes-induced feet stress. The odor- and moisture-repellent properties are a nice bonus.
If you’re seeking a pair of flip flops that feels supportive on your feet without applying additional pressure, these shoes are the way to go.

Quiksilver Carver Suede flip flops are the types of shoes you shouldn’t judge by their look. From the outside, they don’t look like anything special. It’s when you try them on and give them a trial run (=walk), they start showing their true colors.
The dynamic combo containing sponge rubber and leather sole absorbs the impact so that you don’t feel every single stone you step on. This property is also responsible for strong traction control.
The two straps strategically placed on top of the shoes have eye-catching stitching that’s functional too. Together with the sole string, they support the midsole which, in turn, supports your feet.
If we were asked to, we’d give these flip flops a solid 9 out of 10.

Designed by the Hawaii-native company OluKai, Ohana W flip flops are the closest to nature pair of shoes you’ll find (think all-natural materials). We mean it when we say that you can both hike and visit a local pool and expect them to perform equally well. Invest in them and see for yourself.
The construction of the sandals is smart, to say the least. The thong is crafted from water-resistant leather and a quick-drying jersey knit fabric; the midsole has EVA-embedded compression; the non-marking rubber features a high-quality grip. This cocktail works well together to ensure a comfortable wearing experience.
Oh, and did we mention that part of the profits go to the Ama OluKai Foundation that preserves the cultural heritage of the island?

These yoga-friendly Sanuk Joy flip flops are the real deal. Not only are they compatible with sun salutations, but they’re also suitable for beach use. At less than $50, you simply can’t go wrong with them.
What distinguishes them from other flip flops? A synthetic strap with a jersey lining, a slim-profile footbed crafted from a yoga mat, and an Ü sponge rubber outsole.
The Nylon toe webbing and an arch cookie act as a backup for the support and comfort you’ll come to love too.
And even though you have to be careful to not expose the shoes to high summer temperatures, they’re a worthy addition to your wardrobe that will serve you a good couple of summers (with proper care).

What’s better than non-slip flip flops that have ergonomic support and a microsuede-like footbed? The same flip flops made from 100% natural materials. This is the description of OluKai Ohama shoes.
The manufacturer didn’t use any animal-product derivatives and instead incorporated a water-resistant strap, a slip-free EVA midsole, and jersey knit lining into the design of these flip flops. The result – eco-friendly shoes that provide you with the freedom to walk in the sand, splash in the water, and even dive into the mud without worrying about destroying them.
These flip flops are athletes-friendly too. Their orthopedic-like construction eliminates the possibility of foot infections and pressure-induced strain, thus making the shoes versatile.

For all-day comfort that doesn’t go away after long hours of walking, look into Skechers Relaxed Fit 360 Supreme flip flops. This 90s brand knows its stuff when it comes to reliable footwear that feels like your second skin.
Available in a wide range of sizes, they have a slip-on construction that includes a moisture-wicking insole, a gel-infused memory foam, and a molded dual-lite base material. This concoction has been given the term ‘air-cooled technology’ which provides breathability and pressure relief.
The frayed edges give these flip flops an edge (pun intended) that puts them ahead of the competitors. So does the pillow-soft thong that adds to the overall comfort.

Teva needs no introduction – that’s how reputable the brand is in the shoe market. Their Pajaro flip flops don’t need one either, but we’ll try to do them justice.
Built with high arch support, a molded EVA midsole, and a rubber sole, it’s one of the most comfortable pairs of everyday shoes out there. Mix in the soft Polyester lining, a shock-absorbing heel, and a triple-textured thong strap, and you’ve got yourself a whole package.
Pajaro can transport you from a music festival to a picturesque hike in an instant – your feet won’t be strained from all the walking. Instead, they’ll be prepared for a long day of adventures ahead.
And if you’re worried about your feet getting sweaty in flip flops, you should know that the manufacturer incorporated Microban Zinc into the top-sole. There’s no beneficial environment for microbes to emerge.

For most people in surfing and beach partying circles, REEF is as familiar a brand as Nikon is for photographers.
Most flip flops on REEF’s extensive lineup have built up a cult following over the years. That said, one stands out head and shoulders above the rest—the REEF Men’s Fanning Flip Flops.
Named after the legendary pro surfer Mick Fanning, the Fanning Flip Flops embody the Australian surf culture. They’re teak-tough, functional, and great for parties!
While they’ve introduced a variety of new sandals, slides, and flip flops, REEF has stood by their signature Fanning Flip Flops’ original design for ages, and rightfully so.
The REEF Fanning Flip Flops are both durable and comfortable. They feature a synthetic nubuck upper, a full EVA footbed with a 360-degree heel airbag, and a herringbone rubber outsole.
Far from being all business, the Fanning Flip Flops also feature a bottle opener built into their rubber outsoles, which allows their wearers to open a cold one whenever and wherever they are.
That being said, whether or not they’re the right pair of flip flops for you depends on how you intend to use them.

If you have the budget for a women’s flip-flop with excellent quality but a bit on the pricey side, consider the Birkenstock Women’s Gizeh Birko-Flor.
These sandals bear Birkenstock’s iconic cork footbed that conforms to your feet’s shape over time. It will only take time for you to break them in, but once you do, they offer ample arch support.
The Birko-Flor synthetic upper has a leather-like finish, creating a classy look. More importantly, the Birkenstock Women’s Gizeh Birko-Flor is lightweight and easy on the feet. They can easily be your go-to slippers at the beach, specifically during summer.
In terms of durability, you get what you pay for. Birkenstock sandals are known to last longer than most budget-friendly flip-flops and your feet don’t sweat the same way they do with foam or rubber insoles.

The Nike Women’s Bella Kai is ideal for all-day use during summer or whenever the weather is warm. Generally, it is comfortable to wear because of the dual-density foam cushioning of the underfoot.
Another good thing about the footbed of these Nike sandals is that it is specifically designed for women. It has a comfortable cushion that provides enough heel support.
The outsole has a grippy texture, providing reliable traction. If you find yourself walking on slippery pavement, you don’t need to worry too much.
However, these women’s Nike sandals don’t fit as snugly as other high-quality slippers. The straps are a little wide, especially if you have narrow feet.
If you like simple and comfortable footwear for your beach trips or quick errands, the Nike Women’s Bella Kai is worth considering.

What makes the Reef Draftsmen unique is the built-in bottle opener. This opener is tucked into the arch on the outsole. Beyond that novelty, it’s the straps that mark the quality of these flip flops.
It’s not every day that you can find comfortable full-leather flip-flops. These Reef sandals have full-grain leather straps with stitch-free microfiber liners, giving you the comfort you need for the beach or daily life.
However, some users say that these Reef sandals with a bottle opener are less comfortable than other Reef models, such as the Reef Phantoms. They might not be the best choice for an entire day walking around.
If you plan to get these men’s flip flops, note that the straps can be tight in the beginning. Usually, some working, or walking in, is required. You might want to consider sizing up if you don’t want to walk around with discomfort. On the other hand, those who have relatively small or narrow feet are less likely to have problems.

That’s just how it goes. For some reason, we don’t think twice about purchasing flip flops. We treat them like it’s a disposable item that will be thrown away by the end of the season. But what if we took the time to choose the pair that would last a few consecutive seasons at the very least?
This is something we do when looking for the best possible boat shoe we can find, so why not for flip flops.
Below are a few characteristics to keep in mind before investing in flip flops.
Type and Activity
This might sound counterintuitive, but there’s more than just one type of flip flop. Depending on the activity you’re planning on using them for – vacations, hikes, errands, – you’ll have a couple of options to choose from.
The most straightforward use everyone associates flip flops with is, as you’ve already guessed, sandy beaches. There’s a lot to consider when walking in flip flops on a surface that tends to be grainy and wet at the same time. We’re talking traction, snug fit, and most importantly, quick drying time.
For hiking-like purposes, you’ll need a pair that will provide you with some good arch support. It has to be flexible yet sturdy so that you’re comfortable during all hours. Ruggedness and packability should also be the attributes you pay close attention to. We’d actually recommend looking at some of the more hybrid-like water shoes for this purpose. Something like the Merrel Blaze, which look more like sandals.
When running errands, you can get away with a pair of stylish flip flops that aren’t super high-performing. Stability and traction are less essential here – comfort is. Models made from soft and stretchy fabrics are preferred the most.
We also like having a pair to take camping. Shove them in the side of your pack and put them on while sitting on your camp chair by the fire. It’s the same as sitting on the beach, but your feet will thank you for it.
Material
We’ve already established that you want your flip flops to last a long time. In this case, lookout for a pair crafted from high-quality materials (that isn’t always the cheapest).
As the sole of your footwear dictates your comfort, consider picking the one that’s made from thick material that molds to your feet. This way you’ll avoid blisters and fallen arches that aren’t fun to deal with.
Next comes the strap(s). Make sure it’s on the thicker side if looking for a pair that will be used in rugged conditions. Rubber is your best bet here. For a less challenging environment that doesn’t involve rocky roads, go for suede or leather straps.
Comfortable Flip Flops
There’s nothing worse than wearing flip flops that either rub on your feet like a rubber band or, worse, make your toes cramp every time you take a step. To avoid this, be mindful of the little details that can either make or break your flip-flopping experience.
While the ‘thong’-type flip flops are the standard, it doesn’t mean they have to be your first choice. The Y-shaped strap that divides your first two toes is often not the most comfortable feature, especially when walking long distances. Unless you’ve tried on a pair with this type of a strap before and you didn’t have any issues, go for flip flops with alternative construction.
The other thing to be aware of is whether or not you need your shoes to be orthopedic. If cavus foot or pigeon toes don’t sound foreign to you, you might want to settle on flip flops that cater specifically to these conditions.
Price
The cost of flip flops varies depending on the style and the brand. The fancier the pair and the more reputable the brand – the more expensive it is.
That said, you don’t need to spend over $100 to purchase high-quality flip flops (that’s most likely a scam). You can easily find a pair under $60 that’s guaranteed to survive all types of terrains and possibly even dog playtime.

Flip Flops vs. Water Shoes
The main difference between the two is found in the design and features. Water shoes, or Beach shoes as they are also called, are designed to drain the water out of the shoe. They are closed to protect your feet and to ensure they stay on in water and if walking on rockier terrain.
If you plan on dipping your toes in and don’t want to worry about soar feet or losing your shoes, you might want to consider investing in a pair of water shoes for the beach.
